Water Cooler Talk - Some interesting
We have had some interesting discussions lately in the office, Water Cooler talk if you will. I wanted to share with the board some of the recent topics to see what you all think and how things will be changing within this century.
The Human Genome
It is said that we are currently in a new generation of technology and that since we have mapped the human genome, we have finally discovered what makes us age and how we can actually prevent it. The sought after fountain of youth may just be a reality in our lifetime as science fiction will soon be science fact.
It is estimated that there is a person living today, in their 50's - 60's, that will be the first of this new generation to live a robust life up to 150 years old. We have already discovered how to clone or regenerate vital organs, and in a decades time, we will have these advancements available.
We may every well be seeing a new age and scientists have already dubbed the coming of this age as BG: Before Genome and AG: After Genome. Human civliation will actually be able to take over our own evolution.
Advancement of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence
We are nearing the time when robots will be both normal in our every day lives and in some cases, integrated within our own bodies. The question about artificial intelligence is simply a matter of what we want to allow these robots to do. We can limit what the AI can learn and do, and the possibility of an I-Robot scenario wouldn't be an issue. We already use robots to build many things, and the next step is to use intelligent robots to assist daily activities within our society.
Pretty soon, the ability to input microchips to increase our own memory and further improve our intelligence is also on the horizon. Scientists are estimating this being a reality by the 2020's. There are already doctors/scientists/laboratories currently experimenting with some quadriplegics to use their brains to control robotic limbs. A lab in England has already gone one step further and has successfully put a rat

yea, they can implant an electrode type device (please excuse the lack of accuracy with terminology) with an prosthetic arm that uses the joint patents from (get this, matell, the manufacturers of barbie dolls) as *fingers* to move things. its elementary still, however, the brain can "think" as the electronic pulse will "act" out the "will".. its ..
*ponders a bit*
need to do more research before saying anything else..
