Default Anyone else really waiting on the new Z06?

I love corvettes, almost any year. Its kinda sad to see the c5's go, as they were some of the fastest most well balanced sports cars ever, especially the Z06's. The new c6 is here and its a rocket as well. Its nearly as fast as the old Z06, with 1/4 times being reported as 12.4-12.6 with the Z51 performance package. Lateral accelleration is .98g's..... the same as a c5 Z06 or NSX, probably better than both in reality. What i can't wait for is the new Z06 version of the C6. Reports are that it will be either a 6.4L or 7.0L small block (yes small block, think C5R) putting down 500hp and 500tq and not weigh a pound more than the c6 coupe, probably less. All rumors and reports also hint at bulging fender flares for 335 tires, 14'' and 13.5'' brakes, and a lateral accelleration of over 1.00g. I realize that people don't like gossip very much, but most of what is written above is commonly accepted by the corvette community as the most likely Z06 to come out in 2006, being debuted in Jan or Feb 2005. Sticker is reported to be around $64k-$72k. Can you imagine how tihs car is gonna perform!! Think of it! The road holding of any ferrari except the Enzo. The accelleration of the lambo gallarado. And finnally a unique look, with bulging fenders and a unique front fascia. I can't wait!!!

I'll bite.

I'd love to get one. I almost got a C5 Z06. But I hated the interior and exterior style and the build quality of the interior. The new style is better but still doesn't take my breath away.

I can afford one, but at the same time a Aston Martin V8 will be out that's a lot better looking. The AM V8 won't be such a burner, but it may be as quick as the regular C6. Not slow.

I've been doing a bit of thinking about needs vs wants. Got to say 500-hp is want(not need). Maybe I'll sound like an old fart. But I've never and probably will never go to the drag strip much less go out hunting for kills.

I like a fast car, but if the next car is a bit faster I can live with that. I'd rather have a car that's great in in many ways (not just for it's power).

I haven't settled on my next car, but it's even posible that I may get something a lot less over the top (like maybe an EVO MR for 1/2 the price).

I've been thinking a lot about getting a very powerful car. However I'm not sure it's a good idea.

I've driven a 911 tt and a Z06. My neighbor has a 427 Cobra (replica). I've toyed with getting a Ford GT or a C6 Z06. But I have to say, that power is great, but in most cases it's just "potential" power. Like a caged tiger. It's there but can you use it?

Let's see. 10 seconds full acceleration in a S2000, you'd get a stern talking to by the cops. 10 seconds full acceleration in a Ford GT and you might loose your license.

You can go faster on a winding road in a Z06 (than a S2000). I'm not arguing that, the S2000 will be a speck in the mirror. But so what? I mean the Z06 up's the limits you need to reach before you feel like you're going fast. So if you go double the posted speed limit in the S2000 and it's fun, you may have to go tripple the limit in a 500-hp Z06. Those speeds increase the danger but I'm not sure it's any more fun.

I'd like the fastest car around "The Ring", but in the real world it doesn't matter (to me).

If I do get a C6 Z06 I'm worried that 99% of the time I'll be driving it under it's potential. While a little bugger like the S2000 I can red-line all day long.

rai-
good points about utilizing a cars power.
i had gotten bit by the power bug with my sti after a few trips to the 1/8 mile drag strip here in town and wanting to go faster.
then i went to an autox yesterday (didn't drive) for the 1st time and got to ride a bit.
s2k basically stock, 2nd place driver in his class, and it was a blast.
47-49mph in the back slalom felt like 80mph.

270whp wrx in sm class with a driver who many regarded as very good.
this was an f-n trip! what a friggen wild ride. torque, grip, speed, even some out of control fun! (he didn't need the points so was really hangin it otu there)
it made me realize that autoxing and that type of driving is eleventy billion times more fun than drag racing for me.

i'll still mod my car for more power, but now i have an all around goal in mind that will make my car much more fun in all aspects of driving.

after the autox i have mucho respect for s2k's, zo6's, and miatas.
when will automakers catch on and stop making everything fwd?!

I've said this before, my friend owns a 911 tt. he drives it as if it were a non turbo. What I mean is he doesn't drive 0-100 in 9-10 seconds. He likes it because it has a lot of power. I bet if we got G readings with him driving the turbo and me driving my S2000 there'd be very little difference.

All very good points. I suppose its different for me, being much younger than most members here. Still, i'm not very hard on my S, i just like knowing its "got it" if i want it. There is something else to think of. The down right historical signifigance of the C6 Z06 if it goes into production as stated above. It will be the fastest, badest corvette ever made, and sure to be a winner. The only vettes that even come close are the l88 and Zl1 vettes which had 520-575hp...... under-rated at 430. Today these cars sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Granted, the new Z06 will be made in a much higher quanity, but it will hold its value longer and be more of a collector than any car approaching its sticker price. The only other car that comes to mind would be a viper or NSX. The viper is nice, but 20k more; the nsx is sweet by all means, but dated and underpowered and would loose in every performance catagory to a regular C6, let alone a z06. I have no doubt that if you kept a c6 z06 for 30 years it would end up being as good investment as any if you had to buy a new car. Also, keep in mind its new, higher price. This SHOULD translate into fewer of the Z06 label actually being built, which also means more collectability. Its all talk now, I'll have to fire this topic up again in january!

so maybe you guys should stop driving fast on the street all the time and take it to a road course where the car can be used in safe manner. Besides, no rush on the street is even close to what tearing up a road course feels like even as a beginner!!

PS: I will be picking up a C6 Z06 or the viper coupe...whichever ends up being better..... better is such a loaded word!!

PSS: I too am watching the AMV8 very closely!!!

I'm probably going to a C6 mid next year. The C6 Z06 will be a beast if it's anywhere near the rumors. But at the price you're speculating at, I'd take a Noble M12 GTO. Every Noble review I've seen people just gush about the performance and build quality.
