Default Bush approves $25B to automakers.

Bush approves $25B of taxpayer money to the U.S. automakers:

This is interesting as well:

Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co could be eligible for the low-cost federal funding but have said they have no intention of applying for the loans.

Hopefully the US automakers can take the money and make smarter decisions.

The news release and the post is a bit misleading in that Bush did nothing more than sign a government funding bill passed by Congress... his only other choice was to veto it and impact government operations. This is not an administration initiative but a push by lobbyists and Michigan legislators through the Congress. Like it or not you need to look at Congress not the White House for responsibility.

I think we all saw something like this coming. GM is offering employee pricing on everything from Cobalts to Z06s, and Honda can sell a Fit at above MSRP because of the gas crisis(and the fact that it is a really good small car).
The sad thing is that Ford could have gotten into the small car market years ago with the european Fiesta and Focus. All of us would drool of the Focus RS, but everyone else would buy the regular ones and get 35mpg. Instead Ford gave us the awful U.S. Focus.
It sounds like GM is almost betting the company on the Volt concept. It's a great idea, but from what I've read, a lot of the technology is still in its infancy.
If I were the Federal government I wouldn't give GM and Ford the money until they axed Mercury and Buick. Come to think of it, does GM really need anything else besides Chevy and Cadillac?
