The car you'd buy before you bought a BMW
Assume you are looking at buying any type of car BMW makes a model for.
What is the one car you'd buy before you considered buying that particular BMW?

id buy a different car in almost any category except the m5. The “small” bmws are all so heavy, but once you hit the 5 series level it seems to be ok. I expect these cars to be big and heavy.
Cayman over an M2. The Cayman is missing back seats, and that's a good thing.
ND2-RF over Z4. ND2 is lighter and cheaper, and significantly easier to modify. With a set of coilovers and wheels on the ND is the better roadster.

We traded our ‘15 BMW 335xi on a ‘19 Audi A6
Considered a 540i, as we were oldies looking for a little more size and comfort, but the 5 design is 3’years old and the A6 new in ‘19
Not quite as sharp handling as the 5 because of its FWD biased AWD but very fast with the 3.0 and supremely quiet and comfy

Honestly I'm not sure that anything built by BMW (per market segment) would be #1 on my list.
Historically, the edge I've always given to BMW (over it's sedan competitors (don't really consider Porsche a competitor)) has been driving dynamics, driver focus, available manual transmission and (to a lesser degree) styling. Now they offer none of those.
The only model they offer that's remotely tempting (compared to competition) is the M2C.

meh. The m5 isnt big and bad enough? It’s a big car. Cars like the 7 series and the stretch wheel base bmws and Mercs just seem silly big.

If i was crossing shopping M5, I think i'd have to choose the E63 over M5.
The only BMW that is my first choice in the segment would be the entry level sedan and entry level performance sedan. Ie The 3 series and M3/M4. I believe they are the best in the segment and better than the C Class counterpart.
