My 75 Firebird had a built 406 and it constantly overheated. His ratty old Chevette never had any issues and of course never over heated. Can't hate on that car as much as I wanted to Other than rust holes in the floor boar where you could see the road passing.
The manual versions were actually kind of fun. I can't believe someone in my neighbourhood still daily drives one, and it has no rust, but just seeing those old designs really stand out compared to what we have today.

In Alberta, they have an ice racing class that is Chevettes-only. Since they're RWD and available with a manual, they're a lightweight, decently balanced and cheap car that can be run on ice. It's highly competitive, as the power is fairly meagre, and so it's all about driver skill.

I haven't run a Chevette on ice but I did drive a 944 once and it's surprisingly tricky, even in a car with "unlimited" studs (and these are large bolts driven through the tire, not your typical road-legal winter tire studs). There's a real rhythm to throwing the car into a corner and gathering it up. I got it wrong more than I got it right...

I love it. What a perfect setup for that sport.
