Fiat 124 Spyder

http://www.autonews.com/article/2015...-of-124-spider

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/fiat/20...-ar170506.html

What engine is speculation, and some believe the engine might be the 4c's 234 hp 1.7 (I don't because it would steal sales of the much more expensive coupe) but they do confirm they will market a performance Abarth version of the Miata chasis.

Even if it only had the 500 Abarth's engine it is a couple more HP but much more torque.

https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/cr...r-2_600x0w.jpg

I would love to see either of Top Speed's guesses that a 500's engine tuned up to 200hp or the 4c's tuned down to 200hp in that car.

JonBoy 08-06-2015 08:21 AM

That'd be a heck of a fun machine to drive, I think. Similar power-to-weight ratio as a last-generation Boxster/Cayman S.

CosmosMpower 08-06-2015 08:23 AM

I didn't think they could make that car uglier but they've managed to do it. Looks like a chinese knock off of a convertible BRZ gone wrong.

It's a rendering, I doubt the actual car will look like that.

Yes and I really like the looks of the new Miata. The Fiat will be 95% of that car to start with.

mosesbotbol 08-06-2015 09:56 AM

Does not strike me as very FIAT looking at all. Most of their vehicles are Pininfarina designed, but this is off the mark... :ponder:

Kenny_Stang 08-06-2015 10:15 AM

Saw this on another page, seems to have more of the Fiat design language than the other rendering.

Vanishing Point 08-06-2015 10:21 AM

I guess Fiat figured no one would remember the "old" Fiat 124 and Fiat's abandonment of Fiat owners in the States.

cdelena 08-06-2015 12:37 PM

I had a '69 124 Spyder that was that was fun but a maintenance headache. The new Miata looks good but underpowered so this may be a winner. Of course you still get Fiat quality and support but nothing is perfect in this world.

rnye 08-06-2015 12:39 PM

This interests me.

JonBoy 08-06-2015 12:44 PM

I'm seeing sub-6s times for the Miata, with mid-14s at 94-95 mph. It's not appreciably slower (in a straight line) than an S2000. This car would easily be sub-5s 0-60 and mid 13s in the 1/4 mile.

mosesbotbol 08-06-2015 01:02 PM

Hopefully the Multipla is next. Could use the front seats for 3.

:iagree: And I wonder if they will be built in Italy or Japan, which might effect quality, but I'm all for an Italian looking, more powerful Miata. Just not those renderings above - they are hideous.

Dude, Cosmos, what happened to you? You used to be such a nice guy. Now you only ever rip on cars. Did somebody rustle your jimmies? Is this because you own a GT3?

:-)

rob-2 08-08-2015 07:17 AM

Looks. Cute to me

One would hope they would make it less of so obviously a Miata derivative. Even GM got the Solstice and Sky to look more different than that.

I seriously doubt they'll be made in Italy as FIAT is already made around the world. Alfa Romeo will remain made in Italy only according what Sergio has reported to the press.

I've been driving for nearly 50yrs and owned more cars than I can easily remember.

My family knows that if I start talking about a Fiat or a Volvo it may be time to pull my license

Why's that? Volvo's are sturdy cars and Fiat's are fun to drive.

gerry100 08-19-2015 06:22 AM

My '72 Fiat coupe was fun but a design and reliability mess. One part failed that most mechanics didn't know existed.

'98 Volvo XC had a incompetently designed AWD system and electrical systems of poor quality. When it was eating tires, all the factory rep offered was evasive bullshit. Dealers were used to dealing with people who didn't know where the sparkplugs were and tried to take advantage of the situation.

Many other excellent cars available these days,no need for me to forgive and forget

Saki GT 08-19-2015 07:30 AM

1998... thats 17 years ago. I think Volvo has changed hands at least twice since then.

The new 2016 XC90 looks pretty amazing, but the powertrain is interesting - turbo, supercharger, and electric motors all helping a 4 cyl.

Sounds like its destined to be the pinnacle of reliability!

I am quite happy with our Volvo (15.5 S60 AWD) and I haven't had one issue with it yet (owned for 8 months). We are leasing it for 3 years with no plans on keeping it after. Ever since Volvo became big in SE Asia, the brand has really blossomed. Their line up is pretty attractive and a compelling.

JonBoy 08-19-2015 09:26 AM

RedCelica 08-21-2015 06:59 AM

Im not a big fan of the styling...reminds me of the "froggy" MR-S

Kenny_Stang 09-28-2015 07:42 AM

Update spy pics of the car out in the wild, the resolution is not great so not sure what to think of the design, but at a quick glance I think the Mazda version is better looking:

HUNTERANGEL121 09-28-2015 08:56 AM

Looks like it has s2000 proportions lol.

mosesbotbol 09-28-2015 09:06 AM

Looks like homage to Aston from the front and back.

clawhammer 09-28-2015 11:16 PM

Are people going to refer to this car as the Fiata?

Jalopnik is reporting (speculating) 180 hp from the base 1.4l Turbo, and 240 hp from the optional 1.7l Turbo

termigni 09-29-2015 04:05 AM

already looks dated. front and back.

and with Fiat motor? no thanks. i'll go buy a real miata.

Mr.E.G. 09-29-2015 07:40 AM

You know what I'd love to see? I'd love to see Fiat sell a Miata that has some decent power, and then watch them outsell the Miata by a huge margin, just so we can all say, "See, Mazda! See! Listen to us more often!"

Agreed, and I have nothing against a Fiat engine. Fiat and Alfa have been making award winning engines for a while now; all on the smaller displacement. American buyers aren't up to date on where Fiat and Alfa stand in the "engine kingdom", but European buyers are quite aware.

Is Alfa going to share that platform or another for their upcoming Spyder?

I like the sound of that. The styling leaves a little to be desired. I wonder if you could do front or rear end parts swaps to get the fiat powertrain and Miata look or if it would be too extensive to do. If it is just a nose and headlights, or rear bumper and tails and everything bolts up, that would be cool.

I do not like the windshield surround.

WolfpackS2k 09-29-2015 11:04 AM

It looks hideous. This Fiat is the pre-op nose job patient. The Miata is the post-op patient.

If that's seriously what it looks like then I don't care how much power it has, I wouldn't consider it.

JonBoy 09-29-2015 11:21 AM

180 hp in a 2300 lb car? I can deal with a "bad" schnoz.

rnye 09-29-2015 12:02 PM

240 turbo hp in a 2300lbs FR roadster sounds good to me. I don't know whats not to like on the front end.. the grill section is very 1990s Vantage.. I can't really make out the headlights?

I wouldn't sell out my appearance standards for 25 hp. Plus there's no way the Fiat version weighs 2300 lbs. If it's under 2400 I'll be impressed. You think that huge nose doesn't weigh anything?! :baby:

No chance it's 240 hp, maybe 200. What's not to like? The front is so artificially large that this car could be FWD instead of RWD.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh and need to see one in the flesh (at the least high res photos) but I doubt that'll make the bulk look any better in my eyes.

rnye 09-29-2015 03:31 PM

Hey.. I'm being optimistic. And they're Italian so they'll pull an Alfa and give us 90 different weights... And the U.S. version will be 400lbs heavier then all of them aka 4C :-)

unclej 09-29-2015 04:05 PM

Fix It Again Tony

By far the biggest automotive nightmare of my life.

1974 124 Sport Spyder. So much I would never take the chance of it happening again.

Mr.E.G. 09-29-2015 07:21 PM

Styling wise, this thing is putting me to sleep.

MBHs2k 09-29-2015 09:27 PM

The quality of the spy shots aren't good but man that thing looks bad. The first pic looks like a ten year old Cadillac XLR. Can we please just get a better miata
