All of the "pony cars" used the same formula when they first came out, so it's no big surprise that the later interpretations would look similar, especially in silhouette. Long nose, compact cabin, short rear deck, everyone was on the same page.
I could see something like this as a follow on to the current production Mustang. There was some speculation as to whether Ford would follow up the current car with a 1970 repro or something else. A "something else" like this should keep sales numbers up while bringing the car forward in design. The fact that they used the current chassis is a plus for production. It would be a nice bridge to a more modern looking Mustang.

Those seats are quite something, otherwise this design would lose its interestingness pretty quickly at the Mustang's typical sales volume. I mean all those V6 base coupes running around would surely spoil the cachet. The first few times I saw the G35 coupe I thought it was a beauty, but now they are as transparent as Accords, Camrys, etc.
