Default Just rode my first bike tonight.

You guys will think I'm crazy but I just got my motorcycle learners' licence today, and the bike I got to try out was my roommates GSX-R 750. And I'm not a big guy... 5'8" almost 5'9"

I'm HOOKED too. I just kept it tame, riding it around the parking lot, learning how to change gears, using the clutch.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting myself a late 90's or early '00's 600 cc bike of some sort. I'm assuming something like a CBR600 F4i or something similar would be a good first bike for me? I don't really want to go with a 500 cc because I've heard a lot of guys outgrow them far too fast...

That's always a tough question to answer without really knowing your maturity level and how quickly you'll expand your skillset to know before you're going to get into trouble.

All the times that this question has been asked, the SV-650 or 650S keeps coming out on top as a good sporty first bike.

Personally, my first bike was an old Honda CB-750 Custom, sort of a cruiser thing but after that I started riding sportbikes.

Well, quite honestly I'm scared to rev the bike that high, after riding with my roommate on his. I do find myself to be quite mature, and I do know my limits. Hell, going into this, I was scared I'd stall the bike... but everything went off rather well... he's going to take me out again on Monday night to practise starting/stopping, just simple parking lot stuff.

Let me know if you get a bike. We'll go for a rip.

ninja 250 can drop the hell out of it and you probably wouldn't lose sleep over it

then bust out with a brand spanking new bike after some time.

Buy a bike that won't leave you crying when you tip it over. Either one that's old enough (or cheap enough) that a few more scratches won't greatly reduce its value, or one without expensive fairings that will get all cracked and scratched. Very few people get through their first year of riding without dropping the bike once or twice.

This comment alone should be enough to steer you away from such a fast bike.

You don't want to be scared on anything you ride. This usually results in bad mojo.
