Loki,

Did you get your car back or are you still driving the Taurus rental?

Heheh, I can't believe someone who likes Ferrari's is making jokes about other people's cars breaking down.

JFY, the problem is a manufacturing defect in the crankshaft bearing, the tolerances have been changed a few times and most of the affected cars are 11/01 production models. In most cases BMW is covering it under warranty, 100% in SMGII equipped cars, but they are screwing some manual owners.

My car was kept under the 5500rpm/100mph limit for the first 1200mi with plenty of load changes. Oil was changed at 1200mi and checked religiously, car was never tracked. 3 spun bearings at 7700mi, engine replaced under warranty.

I wouldn't be concerned if I was your brother unless he is overrevving it.

Check Jason's site for the latest info.

Cheers,
-loki
