If they can get this car to market for around $35k, they will stand the car world on it's head. 40 miles before onboard motor needs to start to charge the battery will cover most of the daily commuters in America. Imagine only needing to fill the gas tank once a month for the longer trips where the onboard gas motor needs to fire to charge the onboard battery. Otherwise, just plug that baby into the outlet when you get home in the evening.
Electric motor only powers the wheels, gas motor is only for charging the battery. Makes the Prius look like a POS. |
How much will it cost to recharge fully, assuming you only use up the 40 mile electrico-only range EXACTLY each day? IE, what's the cost of using just electricity in the car? Any idea?

First, the Chevy Volt battery pack is specified to be able to store 16 KWH of power.
Second, according to my electric bill, I pay 10.77 cents per KWH for electric supply plus 5.8 cents per KWH for electric delivery. This totals to 16.5 cents per KWH. Next, to fully charge the Volt |

I know it's only a teaser, but why did the OP link seem more like a modelling shoot for a bunch of execs instead of the car?

The Volt looks like the HUGE win that GM needs. The sooner they bring this to market the better off the company is. Not just in sales numbers but for the corporate image.
