new Z4-based M roadster
According to the BMWCCA magazine, BMW has changed their mind about creating a new M Roadster. The story said the Z4 will be getting the new M3 V8 engine and some other "M upgrades".
I would guess this would make it a $60K car, not exactly in the same class as the S2000. But it is interesting, because when they first came out with the Z4 BMW said they would not do an "M" version. As far as I know, the Z4 has not exactly been a house on fire in terms of sales in the suddenly crowded roadster market.

Z4 sales have been lackluster to say the least...BMW really needed to do something to give them a boost and while I will definitely be one of the first in line for this car, most won't want to spend the $60K for a Z4 regardless of engine.
Looks are subjective. And while I personally like the exterior of an S2000, I can, too, find you lots of posts on Z4/350Z/G35 forums from those that laugh at S2K's styling and say it looks wimpy and like a Miata and is just a cheap Honda. Of course you wouldn't agree with that, neither do I; but just to show you there are 2 ways to look at things.

I'm sorry but they're never going to get the big sales with that car's exterior looking the way it currently looks. Most will call it ugly, I'll call it "too radical" here since I'm trying to be nice. I just don't think that exterior holds much appeal to very many people. It's almost unanimous no matter which car enthusiast forum you go to: great engine, awful exterior. Yet BMW gives it more power and leaves the body as-is. Doesn't make sense to me, guess BMW doesn't want to piss off current Z4 owners by re-styling too early and they're hoping the car's appearance will "grow on" their consumers.

i'm really not a big fan of the direction BMW has been going with their designs over the past few years. first the new 7, the Z4, and the new 5. i used to think bimmer's were some of the best looking cars out there, now i think they are just over done, and this is coming from someone who likes aggressively styled cars, not the more sedate older audience BMW is going for.
the E36 M3 and Z8 are both my favorite looking bimmer's. bmw, please fire your new designers. k thanx.
