Nissan canceling appearance at Detroit

Citing budget cutbacks and a lack of new vehicles to unveil.

Wow...I'd do the same thing, honestly.

Sucks. Not sure if I'm going to Chicago auto show this year. I was really looking forward to a first look at the 370z in person. I guess it will depend on what Honda brings out or if there are any other big unveiling's.

Onehots2k 11-25-2008 08:27 AM

Wow, Nissan/Infiniti and Mitsubishi wont be there. I think Ferrari did the same as well. Whose next?

Slamnasty 11-25-2008 08:59 AM

Not a good year for car shows to be sure. I wouldn't be surprised if GM pulled out too.

hondaBeater 11-25-2008 09:59 AM

that is dumb. the ones who show off their goods will sell more in 2009, 2010
honda ftw

dparm 11-25-2008 10:15 AM

Crap. Now I don't really wanna go to the Chicago Auto Show.

hyperpm 11-25-2008 10:19 AM

interesting, nissan drew the crowd in at the sf auto show. people were flocking to gtr and 370z. acura also had a big crowd.

it's tough to see this stuff happening as a detroit myself.

first porsche dropped outta the show back in 03/04ish. they did it because they just didn't have enough sales in michigan to justify coming. that hurt enough, but now, Rolls Royce, Suzuki, Ferrari, Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Nissan are all out of the 2009 North American International Auto Show. most hav all said they plan on coming back, but it's part of their company scaling back during these economic times.
:(

Nissan is a perfect example of a company that has lost their vision towards the future because they cannot see out of their asss, which is where their head is at.

The last thing one does in times like now, is pull back on advertising! And what is especially bad with Nissan is they have already had several years in a row where they have had a pathetic campaign, and now they are just making it worse.

Although times are tough for big trucks, anybody who thinks they are going to dissapear is fooling themselves. Nissan is letting the Titan just die off, which iss really sad because if they had promoted it even half as well as Toyota did with the Tundra them maybe they would be scaling back production, not cancelling the whole full-size truck program.

But does the Detroit auto show really help that much? Any big announcements can be made at LA, Tokyo, Geneva, Chicago, etc. They'll still get national media coverage wherever they go. And Detroit isn't such a big urban market that many people are making purchasing decisions off the Detroit show.

One single show may indeed not help much yes, I agree, but for me it is just one more straw added onto the camel's back, sooner or later it will be the one that breaks it.

Plus, there is a difference between a scalled back footprint, and a deleted footprint. I'm of the mindset that an eliminated footprint from the show floor will send a negative message, whereas just a smaller display could avoid that.

I think I see what you're saying, but it's a still a matter of WHO it will be sending a message to. If it's only to the (relatively) few people who would go to the auto show or the even fewer people who would be affected by Nissan's absence, then Nissan is probably willing to let that message be heard and doesn't feel the consequences will be that steep. I tend to think it won't matter much one way or the other, but then I know almost exactly zero about marketing.

I must disagree with you, and agree with this:

"Detroit consumers tend to be domestic buyers who typically are connected to one of the big three," Denove said. "Ergo, (there are) not a whole lot of actual customers to reach out to in Detroit (for Nissan), relative to the cost of the show."
Why waste money when its return is not profitable at all? Might as well save it for the other auto shows.

UmarS2K 12-01-2008 04:57 PM

I'm not surprised. :(
