Default Porsche SUV: Cayenne. . .Opinions?

http://www.motortrend.com/feb01/cayenne/cayenne_f.html

From here, I have read that it will have a 337hp V-8. Anyone curious as to why a sports car company would introduce an SUV? Granted, SUV's are hot sellers, why Porsche?

The only way the Cayenne could be anything remotely resembling good is if it gives Porsche enough money to put together a successful Prototype, GT and GTS race effort at Le Mans, and have that trickle down to some hot US street legal cars. Hopefully in the $30k - $40k range.

But I can't help but wonder if it's too little, too late. I can't imagine it being any cheaper than $50k. Think the twin turbo version might be beyond the 911? In these times, are people really going to want to purchase such an expensive car in enough numbers to make any difference? They might make some money off of the version that's being sold as a VW, however, if it's cheap enough.

I asked a salesman of a porsche dealer about the Cayenne. He said the price will be above 100k . hope it will only be BS from that salesman.
But I dont think it will be cheap because Cayenne share platform with the upcoming VW suv. Cayenne must cost at least more expensive than the VW. I think Cayenne is cost around the same as X5 4.6 and ML55 if not more than.

anyways I think this Cayenne is a wrong car from a wrong company. although Porsche is good at AWD. but we can not say porsche is a sport car manufactor after Cayenne come out.
Hope I am wrong since Lamborghini did that before. they had a SUV (LM00?, forget the name). and they are still recongnize as pure sport car manufactor

I understand the need for new cash-flow and the popularity of the SUV market, but come on Porsche...give us something that doesn't look like a big Frog on wheels. (I think I had a pull toy as a kid that looked exactly like the Cayenne)

Well, I'm starting to come around on this thing. It's going to be badass. No SUV ever made has a boost gauge like this:

Some videos of it in action:

Looks actually pretty cool. I bet it'll give the S2000 the scares around the 'Ring.

Boost gauge is definitely cool. But the design looks too much like a 911 jacked up on monster tires! Maybe this is one of those it'll grow on you deals.

Just what the world needs now, another SUV And a fugly one at that You'd think Porsche could afford a design team with some original ideas.

I too find this a strange market for Porsche to enter, I think Elistan may be onto something with the racing link - Perhaps Rally-Raiding?? (Paris-Dakar style) If you remember this was where the 959 got its impetus from (and did rather well too!). It certainly would do no harm to their sales to have such a sporting link to their new model - a cut above the X5 certainly....
