R8, F430, Gallardo

From these cars which would you pick?

08 Audi r8
05/06 Ferrari F430 coupe
06/07 Gallardo coupe

Strengths/weaknesses of each
Btw I'm helping friend with this choice. Thanks

Mark355 06-29-2009 10:34 AM

Can't go wrong with any of these really. I haven't been lucky enough to drive any of them but I'd go with the G simply because it's the prettiest and the V10 sounds better than the V8s.

Tell your friend to get whichever makes his blood pump the fastest.

rnye 06-29-2009 10:44 AM

I agree with above. At this level of "sports car" and with the money involved it has to be a passion thing. The Gallardo is a hell of a deal used and the V10 sounds amazing while the F430 is, of course, one of the best sports cars in the world. The R8 is stunning to look at and the the interior is fanastic, plus its the newest of all of the above and I would assume has lower operating cost than the other two.

2007 Zx-10 06-29-2009 10:54 AM

F430. Gallardo second.

sprix! 06-29-2009 10:56 AM

I don't think I would get the Lambo. It would be a toss between the Audi and Ferrari. I am just not a huge Lambo styling fan really. It is sort of over the top and gaudy for my taste. I think Ferrari is much more stylish, and functional even. I prefer the styling of either the R8 or the Ferrari. If he can wait, I believe there is a higher performance version of the R8 coming...

thebig33tuna 06-29-2009 10:58 AM

^ which has the same v10 as the lambo iirc... id get the lambo personally

dparm 06-29-2009 10:58 AM

The R8 seems to be the best car to own and drive on a regular basis. The F430 and Gallardo are a tad on the extreme side for DD.

Kremlin 06-29-2009 10:58 AM

R8 -- you could actually DD that car.

JonBoy 06-29-2009 11:20 AM

2007 Gallardo all the way. Great sounding, great looking, AWD for the occasional unavoidable shower of rain, and arguably the best looking.

The Ferrari is marginally quicker but harsher. I'd expect higher maintenance costs as well. It is no doubt the sportiest and most responsive of the bunch but that's not really worth it to me. I'd probably never drive one of these to their full potential, even on a track.

The R8 is much slower and not really worth talking about in that group unless you're talking about the new one with the V10. It looks great and is daily driveable but I'd expect this to be a weekend car.

If the car is to be daily driven, Audi R8 all the way. Like the NSX, it is supposedly very easy to drive all the time.

duboseq 06-29-2009 11:53 AM

Audi R8. It is so different!

The Gasman 06-29-2009 11:57 AM

Gallardo. Well built, v10 awd.

F430, torquey v8, expensive to maintain compared to the other 2

r8. r8 regular would be boring compared to the other 2. R8v10 would be so expensive the other 2 would be worth buying.

at the end of the day I'd get the Gallardo. I know a lot about Gallardo's and they can be daily driven unlike the ferrari.

The F430 has the least amount of torque out of the bunch or so I thought?

You could be right. I've not driven one, a friend has and he told me it was like the s2000 but with Torque.

neither of them. get an rx7. with some overnight parts from japan it will decimate all.

I think he was speaking in relative terms meaning it is high reving like an S2k.

Though 383 pound ft of torque is still good.

KinCornKarn 06-29-2009 12:31 PM

F430, torquey v8, expensive to maintain compared to the other 2
I will mention this to my friend. He was leaning towards the F430 and kept saying they were pretty reliable.

Can you elaborate more thank you

Tripleblackap1 06-29-2009 12:34 PM

Awsome cars! Wish I had any of them. But if I had the money... I would want to get the Lambo. I like the way it looks the best. Then the Audi, and last the F430. Not to say the F430 is bad, as it is my favorite Ferrari. Just my thoughts...

Tell your friend Good Luck! I hope he has fun dropping over 100 grand on a car!

430's as a modern ferrari are better designed as to service, yet not designed to be easy to service so maintainence is expensive. Also every mile you put on one is a huge drop in price. Also apparently the engines are not well built and I forget which item, but there is a major problem with the engine blocks that a friend who was looking at getting one found through his research.

Gallardo's have lost a lot of value as of late and I believe the current prices are pretty good. Even the lp560 at times can be found for 180k. They are solid cars.

Tan, that g looks SICK!

Jimmies 06-29-2009 01:12 PM

430, because it's the only one with the prancing horse logo :)

G car for sure. Raging bull or prancing horse? Yeah, thought so.

rockville 06-29-2009 01:45 PM

For the price of any of these I could have a few seasons of driving a race car. Why blow it on something that isn't as fast around a track?

F430, BTW.

Antonov 06-29-2009 01:49 PM

F430

Reasons:

-Its a FERRARI!
-It is the culmination of 60+ years of racing pedigree.
-Its RWD
-I think it sounds the best (subjective), most like an F1 car, mostly due to the superior
-Gearbox
-Probably best resale value.
-Its a FERRARI!

.02

Listen to this man. He's driven them.

Personally, I'd want to drive the Ferrari more than the other two, but only if I could afford to put 15-20k miles a year on it. And I know I can't. If I had way too much money, I'd pick it.

So I'd probably go with the Lamborghini, as the Audi R8 just doesn't strike me as an exotic like the Italians. Better than an expensive AMG, but similarly, it just doesn't have the same passion...

Diablo99V 06-29-2009 02:44 PM

The Raging Bull.

Brownergy 06-29-2009 03:07 PM

F430. It's the passion and fun behind the wheel that seperates it from the Lambo. Buy a real car, not an image.

Snowmoto125 06-29-2009 03:31 PM

I would choose the 430 hands down; from the heritage to the styling. The beautiful sound that engine makes at WOT!

You're a dick. Part of Car Talk is talking about cars and people's opinions of them, regardless of affordability. Take your ass back to NSXPrime! :D

Elistan 06-29-2009 05:52 PM

I'd want such a car for how it drives. It's impact on the curb monkeys and other such people I don't know is only a very, very small consideration. Therefore I'd want to drive each car and pick the one that I felt the strongest connection with, and stirred my soul the most. (They're all very beautiful and I'd have no objection to any of them based on looks.)

I agree. I would prefer the high revving boy racer Ferrari over the G....higher propensity to stand the hair on the back of your neck up when nailing it. Although unlikely, I can see getting tired of the Gallardo quicker than the 430. The R8 is far, far more boring compared to the other two in my opinion. I drove one for 2 hours and it started to feel like a 'normal' car by then. Sound is a huge factor, so the 430 gets the nod again.

I'm not sure Audi actually made the R10 and R15. Ferrari certainly does make their race cars. They are probably the only company to actually make both the chassis and engine in house.

Edit:
The R10 chassis is made by Dallara, the same company that does the IRL cars.

Elistan 06-30-2009 06:26 AM

It's worth noting that "made by" and "designed by" can be two different things.

"All design work for the R10 is done at Audi Sport though Audi routinely subcontracts some design and drafting duties to an in-house consultancy called BTZ."

Beat me to it! They were also big in Rally Racing as well for years with that Quatro AWD.

mxt_77 06-30-2009 06:40 AM

I'd want an F430 if I could also afford to take it to the track. Otherwise, probably an R8 because it seems more conservative and more likely to not draw too much attention from people who could confuse it with a TT. And the Gallardo just doesn't do it for me.

Audi has a commendable Le Mans record, but it can't hold a candle to Ferrari's racing history.

When people are claiming it maters, yes. Does that make it a bad car, no. If it's a better car than the competition should I hold the lesser racing pedigree against it, no.

KinCornKarn 06-30-2009 07:28 AM

The 430 was his first choice and he thought reliability on these cars was much better than previous Ferraris. For example he tells me there's no belt service like you have to do with the 360 since there are chains? But now he's still concerned b/c the car is out of warranty.
Perhaps an extended warranty?

But I tell him you have to pay to play.

The gallardo was pretty fun he says, but he found the steering and eGear of the 04 he drove to be a little numb and not as connected as the 430. Has anyone driven the 06 and above?

The r8 of course if the cheapest of the three and still has a warranty. Certainly has the looks, but then he talks about how it has less power

The 06 plus is a vast improvement over the 04 in the Gallardo. The egear is improved as well as the gearing is shorter. There is a little more horsepower and the steering was changed.

I know both Ferrari and Lamborghini have CPO programs if he needs coverage.

AnkitSid 06-30-2009 01:08 PM
