random observation parked next to an old GTi today
I'm old enough to recall the Rabbit/GTi when they were new lol
I parked today next one today, I got out of my M3 and gosh the M3 looked like an S-class next to that car. I decide to look up how small were these old cars? Length/Width/Hhight/ weight '85 GTi 157"/66"/55"/2000 lbs it's hard to find the diminsions of the old cars, but that's one I found The M3 is ~24" longer, ~5" wider, about the same height but ~1600 lbs heavier. |
We should measure the waist of the avg American from those times too. ; )

The 3-series is not a 'small' car any more, probably what the 5-series used to be 10 years ago.

remember this commercial for the GTI? I had been looking (impossible to find) for a 1983-1984 GTI in perfect shape. I found one with 55k miles but it had rust. :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zcm4oS9IaM |

its crazy how cars balloon up..
I think its comical that companies create new cars to replace the old ones that outgrew their class. (Fit, yaris, etc) camry/maxima are HUGE now.. |
Oh, man, that was my dream car coming out of high-school. I tried to buy one but the lowest I could get the salesman down to was $6,300 and I only had $4,500. 83-84 are the ones, they changed up the design a bit in 85 in conjuction with the whole Rabbit to Golf rebranding. I too would love to find one but the more the years tick by, the tougher it will be. I said it before on these forums and will say it again - I would buy that exact same car again today, brand new, unchanged, in a heartbeat.

check out this 1983 GTI. i was going to be a bidder for about $3500 (figured it would be $1k to ship it to me here in PA)... but i got outbid before I even bid.
seller (all postive feedback seller) confirmed that it was rust free.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks...d=p4506.c0.m245 http://i15.ebayimg.com/01/i/001/0d/50/5835_12.JPG http://i24.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/0d/50/5e7b_12.JPG |
