s2000 or turbo mr2?

i'm in the process of buying a new car and i've narrowed it down to two cars, the s2000 and the mr2. i could buy the mr2 without a loan and the insurance would be about 90 a month. if i got the s2000 i would have to take a small loan and pay 330 a month for insurance (i'm 18, no tickets) but my mom said she would pay for half of the insurance so its not too bad. i have driven them both many times but i still cant decide. so what do you guys think, s2000 or mr2?

highrev 08-19-2003 06:13 PM

considering this is an s2000 forum, we're all gunna say buy this car. but seriously, take out the loan and get a car that's better in every single way. and besides, personally i think the mr2 looks like ass. imo. good luck though, either one will be a lot of fun.

The mr2 is old. It looks old too. Time has not been good to the MR2. Now it kind of looks like how the fiero did in the 90s.

Christople 08-19-2003 08:28 PM

You get more space, comfort in s2000. The s2000 is newer, less prone to breaking... and looks is up to you. If you can save about 10k or more on this mr2 i would go for it, if not S2k.

i've heard that turbo mr2's are pretty badass too... god knows you can't really turbo a s2k without losing sleep at night and not getting much outta it.

94rexsf 08-20-2003 11:22 AM

The MR-2 looks like Kermit the Frog on Steriods, but damn it, your 18...

Forget about the s2000, get the MR2, just look out for Mrs Piggy.

Emil St-Hilaire 08-20-2003 04:09 PM

Get the MR2.

green 08-20-2003 08:18 PM

Get something easy to drive (not an S2000 and especially not an MR2).

EvoVII 08-20-2003 08:30 PM

Wow, you guys think the MR2 looks ugly? I think it looks like a little ferrari, especially with a wide-body kit... I would get an S2000 though, it's just a superior car, and you won't have to worry about reliability in comparison to buying a car that is around a decade old.. Insurance is good on the MR2 though, and you don't really want to be in debt at 18, but if all that financial stuff can be managed, go for the S2000

A mid 90's MR2t is a hell of a nice car and like EvoVIII said looks kind of like a little Ferrari. You should be able to find a nice 93 or 94 in good shape for 1/3 the price of a new S2000. If you are talking about brand new cars and the MR2S with an aftermarket turbo or the S2000 I'd go with the S2000.

Penforhire 08-21-2003 08:57 AM

I don't like the MR2 look but it is a real-world-fast machine.

RiceBurnerTX 08-21-2003 09:46 AM

I thought he said new cars....are you guys talking about the older MR2s or the new MR2 Spyder. I like the newer MR2s....not as much as the S2000 though

EvoVII 08-21-2003 10:21 AM

Considering the insurance prices, I think he is talking about the older, low to mid 90's MR2 Turbo's.. The new one's have no performance, and its looks are too consumer friendly, I think they soldout a little with the new one...

You're the first person I've ever heard call the MR2 Spyder's looks "consumer friendly". :p

As for the sellout comment, drive a normally aspirated 2nd generation MR2 and a 3rd generation MR2 back-to-back and then report back with your findings. ;)

I've driven a 2nd gen MR2 (non-turbo) before, but driving a 3rd gen. unfortunately can't be done because they are not available in Canada..

OK, here's a response from an Ex-MR2 owner. I bought my MR2 in July 2k1. It blew 3 days later. 3 months later it was done with a rebuild. 3 months later it blew again. Over 1 1/2 years later it was finally finished and it blew after 20 mins at idle.

Now, not all MR2's are gonna be like this but I'm just explaining my dealings with them. The MR2 is a great car, dont get me wrong, but if I had teh chance to do it all over again, I would have just bought the S in the S in the first place. Not all people ahve had the same experience, but alot that have a turbo get the need for more boost. I went for 600 rwhp and lost the battle after spending over $35k on it.

If you were to buy an S, would it be new or used. Either way, it would be under warrenty or fairly new. The MKii MR2 is in no way under any warrenty unless it's freshly rebuilt. Also with a turbo, you have to worry about how it was driven before. Why are tehy selling it and what have they done to it? Here's my story of my saga with my MR2mr2quik.madpowaz.com.

If you're interested in the MR2, I'm sure the MR2 Forums would be of much help. Even though if you ask this question there, they will most likely tell you to get an S too:D

Here's some pros and cons for each car since I have owned both:

MR2 pros: Nice looking car and not many were imported in the US. The numbers have swindled as the years gone by. Stock turbo 200 hp/200tq, and it dont take much to get them balls to teh wall. The BOV sounds sweet and makes heads turn. 93+ have LSD and upgraded suspension.

MR2 cons: Body style is 13 years old. Parts arent cheap and a modded car breaks twice as fast (or close enough) as a stock car. Headgaskets and #4 cyls are a big issue and repairs are not cheap. 2nd gear syncros go out in the 91-92 models. Theysometimes get confused for Ford Probes:D

S2K pros: Sweet styling and such a more luxiourious car. All are fully loaded and can corner like a cat. Soo many looks and attention. Not as common on the streets but comon enough for clubs and such. Convertable w/hard top option. The people are great!!! Lastly, it's a newer car!!!

S2k cons: minimal legroom on pass side. Could use a better sound system. Um...I'm actually struggling on this one. The 2nd gear syncros, and #4 were an issue but fixed in 2k2?

I mean, you tell me what you would rather have?

I mis-read, I LOVE the 2nd GEN turbo MR2. The new MR-2 looks like Kermy on steriods.

s2ksimon 08-25-2003 08:49 AM

I used to own a '93 turbo and loved it ! the mid engine design and roar behind my ears was fantastic.. if it wasn't for the lack of support by Toyota's TRD, the enormous of wasted time chasing service and parts, i'd would have kept it.. so in the end it was not worth it to maintain it.. many of "us" went towards the NSX, I could not afford to and went s2000. I'm not disappointed in my decision though.

Find a way to get both. I did!
