Saw a Z4 this morning
Woke up a little early this morning and decided to go for a drive and watch the sunrise over the mountains. I ended up heading north out of Knoxville on I-75 towards Kentucky. Very nice morning for a drive- cool and clear with the fog laying low in the valley as the sun peeked over the mountains. I ended up turning around at Jellico, TN. It's a small town (pop 2,448) and I was debating filling up at the gas station when I sighted it. Over at the Rocky Top Market I saw the front of a BMW roadster that was half hidden by the gas pumps. At first I thought it might be a Z8 and since I had never seen one in person I knew I had to check it out. I pulled over on the opposite side of the pump to fill-up and quickly saw that it was a silver Z4 with SC plates. Needless to say I was a little surprised. I looked over at the guy who was filling up the BMW and said "I didn't know they were out yet." He looked at little started that I a) talked to him and b) recognized the car, so I repeated the question. His reply in German accented English was "They aren't yet, preproduction." After which he finished filling up, got in the car, and drove off.
As for the car it was that dark silver with the top up. I didn't have much time to check it out but I did have a few impressions. I thought it looked better in person than in the pictures, but the trunk still looks awkward. The glass window was larger than I thought it would be, definitely larger than ours. The wheels might have been different than the ones I have seen in pictures, they were kind of a radial style with wavy spokes. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good look inside since the top was up. The only other thing I thought as he started the car up and drove away was how nice the exhaust sounded. That's it, I think I need to get in the habit of keeping the digital camera in the car.
