Special tool needed to install oil seals?

Is the driver attachment tool really needed to install new oil seals? Or can you just push the seals in by hand? Any help would be great!

Most oil seals require quite a bit of force to seat. It is very difficult to put that much pressure in an even fashion with your bare hands (& fingers) to get a seal started uniformly. Another solution is to use a very large socket that nearly covers the end of the seal, then pound it in with a mallet.

I used to do it by hand. IE hammer and socket. But after ripping a number of them, only the right tool for me. What seal are you trying to install?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going install the crank seal, and tranny shaft seals on a diff motor, not f20c :) . I'll try what you guys recommend, if that doesn't work out I guess the driver attachment is what I need.

Thanks Jeff, I'll look into that if I can't get the socket method to work well.
