Swapped the engine in my CRV this past weekend..

I bought a bone stock 2000 cr-v 5 speed EX in november for winter duties. It had 183K miles when i got her.

It would smoke sometimes after sitting idle for a few min and burned some oil. (Figured it was valve seals, heck with 185K miles i was just happy it still ran strong) I drove it all winter just fine. In Febuary I was bored on craiglist and found and ad for a 1992 Integra with a rebuilt 1997 b18c1 GSR swap. It was hit in the front end and the kid was asking $1500 for it. After trying to get it running for 2 days I ended up buying the whole car for $900, since it was leaking out of the headgasket. Throughout the last two months, I parted out the Integra completely. My mechanic pulled off the head and asked if I wanted him to take the block apart since the head was full of sludge.

When he took the crank off, he noticed the cheap KING bearings were pitting only after 10K miles since the rebuild. I ordered ACL main, thrush and rod bearings along with new piston rings. To my surprise it had .20mm overbored ITR pistons!

I used ARP headstuds, and changed every single gasket thru out the engine. I also had the head hot tanked and shaved and the block hot tanked. We just put the engine in over the weekend and its running good. I'm using a chipped p06 ecu with a obd2-1 jumper harness.

mods are:
Skunk 2 pro manifold
K&N drop-in filter
ACL bearings
Exedy oem clutch
Stock header and exhaust but DC 4-2-1 header with full 2.5 inch exhaust coming soon
06 tsx rims (waiting on tires)
Fluidyne Radiator

Old b20z2 engine out:

Needed to use upper and lower GSR power steering brackets and an integra throttle cable. Other then that it dropped right in.

CosmosMpower 04-21-2011 12:00 PM

That is badass! Was it a manual tranny already? Which transmission did you end up using? Is it fun to drive?

JonBoy 04-21-2011 12:03 PM

That is awesome! You'll have to let us know how it drives in comparison. More power but less displacement so probably not quite as torquey overall, even with mods?

topdwnsomyheadfits 04-21-2011 12:14 PM

Yes it was already a manual which are pretty rare for cr-v's. I used the exisiting trans since its the only b-series AWD tranny. Its so much more fun to drive. With the stock intake you can't even hear vtec crossover which should surprise a few ricers. To be honest I didnt notice a torque loss. Probably since the original engine had 189K miles when I pulled it out

I like seeing CRV swaps... just like I see Subie Forester swaps with Sti goodies

Christople 04-21-2011 12:50 PM

Can't wait to see the final product!

Do those CRV's of that Gen with the EX 4wd come with 5 lug wheels and all wheel disc brakes?

acus2k 04-21-2011 12:57 PM

Sick!

Driven 04-21-2011 01:03 PM

I'm gonna go against the grain and say, why waste the time/effort? My mom had a CR-V and it was easily one of the worst vehicles I've ever driven and not only because it was god-awful slow, but because it felt like a driving jello.

topdwnsomyheadfits 04-21-2011 02:06 PM

Well It pretty much needed a motor, and after parting out the integra I ended up not paying a dime for motor, or rebuild. It was like getting a free engine swap plus cash on the side ;). Don't forget I still have the b20 motor too. My buddy and I put it in overnight so it wasn't much time wasted.

Ohh yeah and let's not forget re-sale value ;)

Unfortunately the rears are drums but I've seen conversions done.

Carbon Blue 04-21-2011 03:18 PM

thats awesome man! I mean why not If you got a free motor and the tools/know-how to get it done. I woulda done the same if I had your skill set. I mean when it comes time to sell you can always flip the motor for more $$ :)

5 lug
4wd
4 wheel disc brakes, Im afraid not :( rears are drums.

We had one before we got Monicas impreza :) great car for sure.

Ours was an Auto :thumbdn: and had an issue that caused the front rotors to go bad about every 6 months, just a heads up. When using the brakes caused vibration it was always the front rotors, always, dont fool yourself into think they are new rotors if its vibrating they need changed  I went through 3 sets of front rotors in 2008 with that thing :egads:

Any plans for Boost OP?

topdwnsomyheadfits 04-22-2011 09:49 AM

Hey Evan, I remember on my first thread about buying this car you mentioned it. I do need pads within the next month which I will also be doing rotors at the same time. I'll make sure to get quailty ones.

As Far as boost, not really. I dont want to take away from the daily drive-able-ness as far as maintenace etc. Once I come back from vacation next month the wheels will be on so it'll look a little less plain.

smartidiot2122 04-24-2011 02:02 PM

i've seen this swap on CR-V forums. I've been wanting to do this exact thing because i figured it would be the perfect DD with a good balance between utility and mpg. But why didn't you just swap the head over so you could have a b20 with vtec? thats what a lot of people on that forum do so then you have nice torque and all the rest.

topdwnsomyheadfits 04-24-2011 07:40 PM

I average now about 27mpg city and before it was about 18. The motor had too many miles in my opinion to just swap heads. Plus I don't like Frankensteins like ls/crvtec. I feel like it wasn't worth the trade off for reliablilty just to have 10 more ft/lbs of torque. Plus I like 8k rpm redline :). If I left it with the b20 id have to change the rod bolts so it can rev that high safely . I haven't noticed any torque loss but it's also modded lightly so it definitely helps. It has a nice pull all the way up to redline. Definitely more peppy around town.

Presto123 04-25-2011 07:03 AM

That's pretty damn cool.

Disgustipated 04-25-2011 11:14 PM

This would be such an awesome daily driver, especially with the MPG you're getting. I want one!

topdwnsomyheadfits 05-02-2011 06:56 AM

Heres a video of mid-1st thru 2nd pull in the crv :p

topdwnsomyheadfits 05-02-2011 11:35 AM

Messing around cracking vtec

omairtheman1 05-02-2011 12:18 PM

These videos make me smile... It would freak me out if that rolled up next to me and was surprisingly quick lol.

beanseff 05-02-2011 07:03 PM

i've had this idea for a while but mine would be a b20 stroked to 2.2 and a gsr head, upgraded valvetrain for higher revs , and bc stage 2 cams my goal is the ultimate sleeper

IAmTheRealAsif 05-03-2011 09:31 AM

I would love a crv with a b18 with some boost. Run evos from a dig hahaha

emac0408 05-03-2011 06:51 PM

That is awesome.

senor_flojo 05-03-2011 09:39 PM

Agree :).

berlinablackie 05-04-2011 05:26 PM

That is awesome! You definitely have to bring the crv to an upcoming meet. I can't wait to see it in person.

Note to self: do not race green cr-v from traffic lights. :)

FearlessFife 05-05-2011 09:21 AM

Awesome.

Haha Chris I'll definitely bring it out sometime. Maybe I'll bring it on a tuesday night cruise lol. Just gotta slow down around the twisties!
As for a drop it would definitely look soooo cool but I need the extra clearance esp after this past winter.

clarkster009 05-18-2011 06:04 AM

That's pretty cool man. Amazing that it is such an easy drop in. So you didn't need new engine mounts?

JS2k.com 05-18-2011 12:55 PM

Haha, I've seen one in Dallas, and that thing is awesome. Coincidentally, it was also a green CRV.

topdwnsomyheadfits 05-30-2011 07:45 AM

Well I plugged in my buddies hondata s300 and loaded it with a base type-R map with vtec at 6k and it ran very smooth. We even played with launch control set at different intervals from 3500-5500 and it spun all four for a second or two then it bogged once it hooked. I'm thinking the only way to get a spinning launch out the hole without bogging is like a 6500rpm launch, BUT I'm scared of breaking the diff, driveshaft, or tearing a mount.

CASTRO 06-07-2011 09:21 AM

fresh!

topdwnsomyheadfits 11-15-2011 07:56 AM

My oil pump took a shit and nearly spun a bearing in cylinder one only a few days before trading in my s2k back in august. It should be back together in the next week or so.

Switchblade 11-16-2011 07:23 AM

My dad has a 98 CRV, same color as yours, also a 5-speed. This makes me want to mess around with it.

Grady 11-16-2011 08:51 AM

You can always convert to rwd. :) Take the front axles out and plug up the holes. You know like the rwd Integra!

topdwnsomyheadfits 12-03-2011 02:30 PM

Engine is rebuilt (AGAIN) and running. I've been driving it for the past two days and everything feels good. Purrs like a kitten. Next on the agenda is to finally get some tires mounted on the TSX wheels. Iphone Photoshoot should be coming in a few weeks :)

Christople 12-03-2011 03:24 PM

Rather mod a forester

@ disgutipated yuppp he surrreee is :)

bans25 09-05-2015 05:20 AM

Today is the day I do my first CRV motor replacement (stock for now).. Do you pull the engine wiring harness off the motor while in the car or disconnect the harness the car and remove with the motor/trans?

Someday I would love to do this VTECH swap!

myclue 09-05-2015 09:55 AM

Very nice! good luck with it!

myclue 09-05-2015 10:29 AM

I have a 2004 CRV with almost 210k miles on it. It's my dream to drop in a K24 with 6spd trans one day :)

dowjones 10-05-2015 01:34 PM

That video is awesome. I would never imagine taking my CRV to redline lol.

I have a green 2001 manual CRV with 245K miles on it. Never had a problem with that car.
