Plan on 2 to 3 grand a year in mainenance and repairs.

I would have to say that yes it's probably worth that much cash, since it is not a typical early 90s E-class. It also looks very sharp. I want it now. If the car has all the new pieces listed, and all the major services done, which it seems to have, it should be god for a while. Sure it's a 15-year old car, but there's a lot new on it.

Old Mercedes and BMW hot rods typically will demand prices in the teens no matter how old. You have to spend around $20k to get a real nice E24 M6 for example. There's a point where these cars stop depreciating, and actually start going back up a smidge. I've always wanted an R107 560SL for instance, but good ones start at $20k, even 20 years later.

I would buy that car in a heartbeat. Limited production, normally aspirated porsche V8 in a subtle E series sedan. Talk about a great sleeper. In my book its the Ultimate Q ship for interstate travels. Just make sure you have perfect service records.

Those are cool cars.

JonBoy 03-29-2007 07:29 AM

Sick car. I'd offer him $14K, though. :D

Not to pick nits, but I believe the car came with a MB motor, the 5.0 DOHC 322hp V8 used in the S and SL classes at the time. It was just assembled by (and maybe jointly developed with?) Porsche, as I recall. The E500 was pretty legendary in its time, and I still think they're nice pieces today. Me, I'd rather see the car in stock form (especially lose the 19" wheels), but it does look nice.

If my memory serves me correctly, that was a $90K car when new. As long as it has been properly maintained it is a steal at $15K. Most sell for $25-35k. Like some others have said, it will be expensive to keep on the road.

Awesome car!

That is a smokin deal provided you can afford it and you are into it.

I believe in another post he listed the mileage as 160K+

If you slapped on 19inch rims, lowered it, and got the clear corners on a E320 of the same year, would it look like that? (of course it wouldn't have the wide fenders)...

If so, it would make for a pretty kewl daily...

Probably gets 13mpg going downhill. Seen the cost of gas lately? :) Cool car though!

Really? Is the mileage really that bad on this car??? 2.8L engine right?

5 liter V8, hence the 500E. It's the same engine that was in the SL500 with a few tweaks on the intake/exhaust. 15k is maybe a bit high, but it really depends on condition on a car like that. So, yah, the mileage is probably pretty bad... 13-15 in city sounds about right to me.

No.. I was saying if you just got a regular E320 would the mileage be bad.. i'm sure on the E500 doesn't get great mileage...

CalBear 03-30-2007 08:00 AM

If it comes with all of the service history and checks out, it's a good deal. I test drove one of these with my parents when they first came out and it's a monster. Too bad it comes only in auto, which is good enough of a reason for me to get an e34 M5 instead.

Agreed. The sign of a truly pimp car is its lack of loss of pimpitude over the years.
