Is Your Daily Driver an Auto or Manual?

Reconsidering my daily driver options down the road and wondering if I really need two manual cars. I feel like if i got rid of the TL for an automatic cruiser id come rushing back out of boredom. But its so hard to find a V6 car with a manual now, it comes down to if a 4cyl manual or a 6cyl auto will provide more satisfaction. I feel like i'd miss the V6 more than the 6 speed. Anyone else in/been in a similar boat?

DallasAp1 04-06-2013 06:46 PM

Mine is automatic but sometimes i wish i got manual as a dd as well. you want v6 and manual so how do you feel about honda accord v6 with six speed ? :tipwink:
edit: another good one a little more expensive infinity g37?

The Accord is about the only realistic option, but i'd rather go sedan. My goal is a 2009+ model with 60-80k for under $15k. I paid 17k for my TL in '08 with 80k on it. The G37 would cost me that much for an '09 with even more miles.. plus I would never see 30mpg in it.

mosesbotbol 04-07-2013 05:10 AM

I was between two cars choices, 997, and XK... The 997 had the manual option which I really wanted, but other factors outweighted "rowing your own" at the time. Now, am I saying "next car for sure will be a manual"... Only time will tell. Choices are getting few and far between for manual drivers. Amazing that Aston is offering a manual

JonBoy 04-07-2013 06:29 AM

Summer DD = S2000 (manual)
Winter DD = Silverado (auto)

Mr.E.G. 04-07-2013 06:42 AM

I have a manual but I would gladly trade it for something with some sort of DSG manual/ auto hyrbid whatsit.

cbehney 04-07-2013 08:28 AM

Manual. Sometimes it's a pain in DC traffic but overall it's worth it for the fun and engagement.

UC Gordon 04-07-2013 11:08 AM

6 speed manual. I have a short drive so shifting gears adds a little bit of fun to the process.

RTL2K 04-07-2013 11:52 AM

Auto. Commuting through stop & go traffic can get tiresome with a manual. once in awhile i'll commute with the S but I like the option of not having to shift on every single outing i take

i_heart_my_DB8 04-07-2013 04:31 PM

The best thing about automatics is how much room there is for your purse.

(I keeed, I keeeeeeed.)

My daily is a 2007 6 speed Civic SI. I am in outside sales and drive about 140 miles a day in Atlanta traffic 5 days a week. I have no issues with it.

SpudRacer 04-07-2013 05:29 PM

My daily driver's are both automatics with manual shift capability.
  • Summer = Crossfire SRT6 aka SLK32 AMG.....5 speed lever shifted, lockup converter 2-5.
  • Winter = Mercedes R500 4Matic.....7 speed paddle shifted, lockup converter 1-7.

I got rid of my 08 S2000 after 3 years. The car was a joy to drive and own but traffic where I live made it very hard to enjoy the car. My morning commute is 33.5 miles. That can take anywhere from 45 min to 2.5 hours. That's 2.5 hours of clutch, roll 10 feet in 1st gear, complete stop, repeat for 33.5 miles. It sucks. So, I started taking back roads and avoiding highways. It added 10 miles to my commute but gave me a guaranteed hour and 10 min commute +- 10 min. And the S2000 was great at 35-50 mph on those roads. And then even small back roads started to clog up with box trucks and plumbers in commercial vans trying to avoid the same traffic I was running from. So now I can shift when I want or stick the car in full auto mode and zone out. No regrets with my traffic situation. If I lived elsewhere, I'd still own the S2000 until it rotted out from under me.

On the plus side, the SRT6 is almost exactly the same size as the S2000 but with a 4 ft shorter turning circle and the supercharged V6 is easily modded. Mine is putting out 410 HP and 390 ft/lb (crank) currently. The great gobs of torque (>90% of peak) from 1,800 - 6,000 RPM makes up for the great Aisin gearbox and shift lever in the S2000.

Hahahaha.

dc2-2-ap1 04-07-2013 09:00 PM

My dd is an automatic Tacoma. I was spoiled by the S, I can't stand long throw, sloppy shifters. Plus I have to wear steel toe boots to work and I can't stand driving stick in them. I wear driving shoes when I drive the S to work, and then swap shoes when I get there. That is something I am willing to do with the S, but not something I want to do every day.

WolfpackS2k 04-08-2013 05:08 AM

I haven't owned an automatic since 1999.

I don't foresee any future car purchases that won't be "row your own" either.

CosmosMpower 04-08-2013 06:24 AM

Slushbox. No option for the GT-R. I hate it. Even though it shifts fast the upshift/downshift logic is still really dumb.

Syn 04-08-2013 07:12 AM

My daily driver is my S2000. Indianapolis traffic is virtually nonexistent compared to other cities its size.

LeonV 04-08-2013 02:42 PM

Never owned an automatic and never plan to. I love the involvement of a 3-pedal manual, regardless of how the shifter feels. Each one is unique in it's own way and adjusting to the nuances is the fun part. :)

stockae92 04-10-2013 12:28 PM

6MT, not the great option for my left knee, but I can still manage. lucky enough, i don't have much traffic for my commute. but even in moderately heavy traffic and with my left knee "not complaining", i would still go for MT over auto.

My DD is a E 92 335i M sport manual for me

mchi5 04-10-2013 07:45 PM

My S2000 is my daily driver, so manual.

I only take the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (auto) when the weather sucks... :D

(Hell, even my Ferrari F355 is a 6-speed manual)

Moddiction 04-10-2013 08:19 PM

Thought of buying an auto daily driver but then I remembered how boring auto is. If I were to get an SUV or truck I'd probably get an auto but for a daily driver car I had to get stick. Picked up a 2008 legacy gt this winter. Great daily driver!

Presto123 04-11-2013 07:25 AM

I daily my S 60 miles a day for the work commute. I experience light to moderate traffic in the morning and light to no traffic in the evening. Even with heavier traffic I don't think I could drive an auto every day.

TommyDeVito 04-11-2013 09:27 AM

Never owned an automatic car and never will unless I actually play the lottery and win. The only time I drive them is when I rent a car as you have no choice. Within 10 minutes I'm bitching and cursing at the POS no matter what it is.

Even when I used to commute long distances for work purposes or finishing college, the stick never bothered me in stop in go, it was the stupid drivers.

I'm a lunatic I guess. X mfr. offers paddles only, auto trans only, cvt only, etc, then that is a car I will never, ever, consider buying. In a supercar, yeah I could deal with paddles, but anything I can afford, not a chance in hell.

Mr. Kicks 04-11-2013 04:12 PM

Been using my 6spd TSX for daily duties the past couple years and haven't looked back since. IMHO it’s the perfect daily driver and is probably the best gearbox I've driven thus far.

NDAZONE 04-11-2013 05:42 PM

The S is my fun car. For the boring day to day I have an automatic Accord coupe v6. I like it a lot and the wife can drive it, too. I thought of getting my Accord in manual but my wife can't drive stick and sometimes I really don't want to have to shift.

RedCelica 04-11-2013 07:32 PM

auto...but would rather have a manual. All autos are boring.

Apex Surgeon 04-11-2013 09:15 PM

I must be getting old because I rather enjoy DD'ing my auto jeep Cherokee. Commuting in socal is rough so auto is just fine with me. When I'm feeling saucy I'll drive the s2k on a Friday ;)

Not sure where you commute, but this sounds exactly like Nashville. My commute is around 34 miles one way right through town. Some days its easy, some days its a nightmare.

Better than the gearbox in the S?

North Star 04-19-2013 12:52 PM

I got an automatic Forester for my DD. While I do love it, I am really missing stick shift. :(

In my opinion, yes. The TSX has a slick, buttery feel to it. I also have a Bardi short shifter and HR shifter bushings installed on my TSX, so that tightened things up a lot compared to the stock parts. Although, even in stock form its still a pretty nice gearbox. But once again, this is just my personal opinion.

My DD is a 2013 Elantra with a 6 speed. I would only buy an auto if I had to live in the city and constantly parallel park.

I let my GF and family members learn to drive stick on the Elantra because 1) it's under warranty 2) it's a Hyundai :p

billios996 04-23-2013 09:16 AM

We have a 325ix stick for the wife's DD and a Caddy SRX that just replaced my Explorer as the foul weather car. The Caddy will eventually become the wife's baby hauler and the 325 will become my foul weather car.

Go trickle down economy!

I don't understand your parallel parking comment. I find it far easier to parallel park with a manual transmission than an automatic one. With an auto you have to wait for the computer to switch between D & R after you move the shifter. It's not instantaneous like a manual and can result in some jerkiness. This is one of the reasons why it's far easier to "rock" your car out of a parking spot when it's semi stuck in the snow.

TheGreenHellAP2 04-25-2013 11:12 AM

For me, the S2K is my DD so it's three pedals all the way. Once dem payments are finished and it gets relegated to weekend warrior status I've been eyeing up an E39 M5, which too would be strictly a six-speed. Even in traffic once you get accustomed to engine braking and predicting the asinine things other drivers will do, stick's really little penalty in traffic for the rewards when the traffic lets up. Maybe it's just my deal, but I don't even really feel like I drive an automatic, I don't feel in control like I do with a clutch pedal and a stick with some numbers on it.
