The e39 5 series (1997-2003?) and e46 3 series (1999-2006) are some of the most reliable and easiest to work on BMWs ever made. The main issue the e46 has is the subframe.

I owned 2 E46 M3's and can tell you this...I'd rather lose one of my balls than own a BMW out of warranty.

P.S. I don't care what anyone else says, nor do I care what other BMW owners say...in my family we have had 8 BMWs, and ALL of them had problems. Most were minor (car was drivable) but annoying and sat at the dealer. My M3s were 2003 and 2004.5, and both of them were at the dealership constantly for stupid sh!t. I am not saying the motor is going to fall out of the car, but I am saying that the gremlins WILL show up. Take that for what you think it's worth.
so when you change out your fuel pump you can also change out your Balls.....maybe you can even upgrade to a bigger set...

Not the E39 we owned. Our 2001 530 practically lived at the dealer for the last 2 years of its 8 year stay with us. No matter how much work you put into it, there was always something else breaking. Parts as you would guess were not cheap.

BMW's suck, period (I would go far enough to say that all german cars suck). My family has owned multiple bmw's and mercedes and have never had a good experience with any of them. We actually have a 08 335 and a 08 328 convertible, honestly I have no idea where german cars got the reputation for being reliable..... we have had to change the fuel pump on the 335 at least 4 times and dont even get me started on the 328... the convertible top has broken 7 times and it had the worst valve tap... Both cars are up for sale. I will never own a bmw again and def not one that is out of warranty...

Sorry you had trouble with yours. I'm approaching 10K miles on my Audi and haven't had a single problem. Not a squeal, rattle, electronic malfunction, nothing. I was a bit hesitant about it, being an Audi, much less a German car, but I'm pretty impressed. I know it's still early on, but I've had a much better experience with this car than my Infiniti.

Back OT. Glad I didn't pick up a 335.

If you want move to luxury sedan, I'd would also look at G sedan or lexus IS. Just my two cents...

That would also ease your reliability concerns lol...

I am a fanboi of BMW, however I agree. OP, get an S5 if you can swing for it.

How do people like the Infiniti G series: the motor- handling.
