Well there's a good chance that my S2K will get sold this week and I'm trying to decide on a new, fun car.

My budget is about 28 000$ USD and I don't care at all if it's an older car.

I recently test drove a 1998 M roadster with the Euro 286 engine swapped in and that thing hauled serious ass! I'm not a sucker for straight line speed as I prefer the steering-shifter-clutch combo in a car but man...so much power in such a small car with a short wheelbase!

I imagine a 2001-2002 BMW M coupe with the 315 HP engine would pull even harder and having a fixed roor it would handle better.

Have any of you owned-driven a lot the M coupe? Does it really handle and feel THAT better than the M roadster or do the differences only pop up on a race track?
Is the suspension a lot softer than an AP1 S2000? Reliability?


I'm also looking at a 1991 Porsche 911 C2 because I absolutely LOVE the steering feel on that car; it's almost Lotus Elise-like. I know they aern't that fast but they seem so raw and transmit tons of road feel to the driver which is my highest priority.

Care to suggest any other fun car that fits in my budget?

I know I should ask these questions on BMW and Porsche forums but I value what you guys have to say more because S2000 owners tend to have the same definition of ''driving pleasure'' compared to others

Never driven one, but you could look up the Ghost Rider video where he drives against a BMW Z3 Coup

The only substitute for an S2000 is another S2000. Just my $.02

I'm on my 3rd S2000; I'd just like to experience something different, life is too short and I don't have the money to keep an S2000 and get another 30K toy.

I've put some good seat time in an S54 M Coupe. The power in that car is amazing. It must have something to do with how close the drivers seat is to the rear wheels, but you really feel the torque in that car. The fixed roof gives it a more solid/refined feel. I would really suggest that you find one to test drive. If you like the looks of the car, it would be really hard to turn down a good example..

They are very hard to find for under 30K

I hear the M Coupes are extremely fast and fun. If I was in a market for a BMW I would not turn it down if I found one for the right price. I'd probably take that car over any other BMW at this point.

If you do some research I think you'll find that those cars are extremely exceptional.

The MY84-89 911 Carrera has great steering feel, better than the 964 (MY89-94) generation cars. The earliest 964 cars also have some reliability issues (leaky motors).

I agree completely. Great car (a colleague of mine has one, w/ the S54 333hp motor)--good luck finding one. You might want to broaden your search a bit and consider the roadster w/ the same powertrain.

I just wish that car had Xenons!
