Ever since I was a child, my parents had that god awful station wagon with the wood paneling, I told myself I'd never own a station wagon especially when a wheel fell off while riding on a length bridge in PA, caused 2 accidents. Am I missing out, maybe but whenever I see a station wagon all I see an overgrown growth at the end of the car. As cool as the CTS-V Wagon is, I will never like them. Consider me poisoned by this:
After than I starting looking at them a bit differently and later I swore that a sport wagon would be the closest I ever got to driving an SUV or Van.
And yeah as far as the safety, look at that with a very critical eye. Aside from the higher CoG, SUVs also typically have worse braking and accident avoidance ability. Also, simply being heavier and larger does not equate to safer. Just as an example, the 2012 Edge only got a 3 star rating for a frontal collision and the 2012 Sante Fe has a 2 star side impact rating. I would consider both of these marginal to poor in terms of safety.
Unfortunately in this day and age if you want a mid-sized to full-sized station wagon your choices are ridiculously slim. Full-sized options are non-existent and most mid-sized ones are made by MB, BMW or Audi so you have to pony up a lot of cash for them. As to your typical CUV they're just cars jacked up 4-6", nothing more.

I don't know about that... the legacy GT wagon screams the same thing for me except add in grocery getter meets soccer mom can't afford mini-van.
'05 Legacy GT wagon is a lightweight, low-slung, trackday-worthy sports car compared to the Edge "sport".
I feel bad to since I recommended it to her.
