Default Goodwood - the future of car events?

Good read. Is the future of keeping people interested in cars about actually enjoying them, instead of just looking at them?

Heck yeah!

As things get more autonomous, it will only become more so. In fact, the gentleman commentating the event even stated that as things continue to progress in that direction, there will be a re-focus on using cars for their intended purpose... driving. I agree.

I went to Goodwood 5 years ago, and it was absolutely unreal. To see, hear, and smell all these dream cars of past, present, and future actually in action was amazing. Monterey Car Week coming up next month is similar, although spread between many different events vs. all in one place. If you get a chance to go to Goodwood, do it - it's epic.

I go to a traditional car show every 2-3 years or so (including the Detroit show twice) but it's maybe 1/10th as exciting. No action, just cars sitting there, and a lot of the best ones are behind ropes or on a stand. It's basically just a huge showroom, but with more people in your way and fewer test drives. I wouldn't spend more than 20 bucks to go to one.

One reason I like the local cars and coffee is getting in early and watching and hearing the cars coming in. I spend a lot of time watching the cars drive by versus looking at them parked - much more interesting.

I want to attend Goodwood's Revival - I'm hoping someday soon they have events for cars from the 80s and 90s too.

Cars are meant to be driven. For example, I am not in the least impressed at seeing an S2k with 5000 miles sitting all shiny in a garage being protected. Its cool to see a low mileage one, but to me that screams "buy and and enjoy being able to drive the shit out of it for more miles!" rather than "better keep the miles low on that thing so it may be worth what it was new again one day" :P

And if we ever go self driving cars 100% (hopefully I have been long gone by then) I think the car culture will die completely. People just wont care as much about their cars in my opinion. Driving something because you LIKE to is still important, Not everything has to be practical or have some uber logical positive impact to the world.
