2019 Miata press event

There was supposedly a press event for the 2019 Miata yesterday. This is the first review I have seen, but more should pop up soon for those interested.

Why is there ANY interest here in the new Miata? Or ANY Miata for that matter? Miata = Yawn. Every one of us could have bought one. Didn't, of course.

S2000 is getting old. Some of us may just want a change, as well. Haven't driven one myself but definitely interested. Sure, the Miata doesn't have the S2000's awesome engine, among other things. But it does have a friendlier chassis, substantially less weight, newer features like Bluetooth, a warranty, far better gas mileage, likely better steering feel, more torque, some promising mod potential, etc.

For me, in a few years when these drop to ~$20k it could be a good S2k replacement that's perhaps a little easier to live with as a daily.

I track my car pretty hard, if I "pop" my F20C it'll get pretty expensive to replace it and even then, it's likely a used motor. The Miata is a solid replacement with TONS of support.

 I don't track hard or often but losing an engine is still a concern, or losing the car in general (track or daily driving accident). The ND2 out of the box will probably be 90% of my AP2's performance with a bunch of features that I don't have. I'm excited to get behind the wheel of one.

In Canada, a Miata with sport package (Brembos, Bilsteins, BBS forged wheels, etc) is about $45K for the mid-level trim. A local dealership has a 2016 for $30K with about 11K miles. That's a 33% depreciation in two years, which is awesome for used buyers, on a car that's in perfect shape.

These cars depreciate quickly. Gotta love it, if you don't buy new!

This car is exciting for me due to modern conveniences combined with a very low weight (under 2400 lbs!), low running costs, low consumables, tons of aftermarket support and an engine that now spins to 7500 rpm (finally, something "sporty"). That's a tough combination to beat, especially when a used two-year old version is available for $20K USD these days.... I believe this update will further depreciate existing models somewhat, based on the 20% power output increase. Heck, even an adjustable steering wheel is a big deal for some people.

In city driving, it's about as quick as an S2000 (maybe quicker, in some situations), sounds good, looks good, and should be reliable. What's not to love?
