Default 2019 Toyota Corolla

Yeah yeah Toyota Corolla, sorry to interrupt the riveting discussions here lately.

Anyway, car looks good, and is that active rev matching I see for the stick option? Styling inside and out looks good, but I wonder if Toyota has the gonads to build a gti fighter out of it.

Toyota Corolla is an amazing car for the price, always has been. You want to go 0 - 100K miles with minimal dealer visits; that's it.

It does look good, outside. Not too sure about the interior - need better photos. The Civic is going to destroy it in performance, thanks to an underrated turbo engine making more power and torque, I would imagine. Fuel economy will probably be pretty similar but we'll see how it all pans out. I think this looks way better than a typical Civic, that's for sure.

100k? Man, those things will go 150-200k without many dealer visits. I still would never, ever, ever, ever buy one because they bore me to tears.

They are at the pinnacle of super solid, reliable, efficient, high value, bland, boring, soul crushing meh.

I don't blame Toyota for making it that way one bit. I blame them for the fact it will be one of their sportier offerings in years. The thing I have in common with Toyota is that the 90's were my peak too.

I'd buy 100 Civics before one Corolla.

For the record, we're now at 276K kms (171K miles) on our 2008 Civic that has been to hell and back (Alberta winters, Texas heat, two days on the racetrack, been in 4 minor accidents, used as the family chariot for the first 9 years of its life) and the only things I've changed are fluids, brakes, tires, wiper blades, spark plugs (one set), interior HVAC blower and washer fluid pump (less than $150 in parts, other than standard maintenance). Not a single mechanical issue of any sort. I was swapping the summer tires on last week and found a small fluid leak (doesn't drip on the floor, just has a slight film on the side of the engine block) so that may be our first potential mechanical issue.

Yes they are very reliable but I hate what they stand for. They are just so bland and boring to drive, and way behind the times.

I remember when my sister was shopping for her first car and we took a '93 Corolla out for a test drive. The whole family riding along could tell it was pitiful crap to drive and turned around to go back to the dealer within two blocks. She wanted a Golf but ended up getting a '93 Accord.

I rented a last-gen Corolla a couple of years ago and it was like stepping back to the early '00s in style, performance, comfort, etc. Just laughably behind a Civic, Focus, etc.

Up until I believe 2016 you could still get a Corolla with a 4-speed auto. They know there's a large mass of people who don't know or care that there are far better driving cars in the class, they are just utterly terrified by any lack of reliability (perceived or real) so will just buy a Corolla without shopping around or even test driving.

Yeah, the 4-speed transmission was a joke in terms of modernizing the car but it was definitely reliable. Ultimately, I think they realized that they still had to keep up with the competition and they HAD to update the transmission to not look too lazy.

I mean, a horse and buggy was pretty reliable, but we had to move on....

Life is too short to drive a Corolla!

They've been making sporty versions of the Yaris here https://www.toyota-europe.com/new-cars/yaris-grmn so perhaps they'll do similar for the Corolla?
