2nd Gen Lexus GS400/430 revisited
So I'm looking to replace my BEATER 97 subuaru outback sport with an oldie but classy:
2nd Gen Lexus GS 4xx
Things I will be giving up: AWD. Winter practicality
Things I will be gaining: Prestige, smoother ride, highway cruiser, power, luxury, reliability.
I'm shocked to find some 430 have dropped to the low teens. I guess the market for V8's are just super soft right now. 98-00 models can be found under $10k!
Do you guys think this is a good move considering I still have a S2K as a weekend car? How will 2 RWD vehicles work in the winter months ahead? I like the fact that they are very different. S2K is pure sporty while the Lexus is boring but comfortable and a lil bit of pep in power when you jump on it.
There's not that much difference in the model years - I actually prefer earlier years that had the thumb shift sports mode.
Also, are there any known issues with this car that requires common repairs?
Give me your thoughts on if I should make this move?

Had a 99 GS400, great car, no issues at all in 4 years and 50k ish miles. I liked the shift buttons on the steering wheel, pretty fun. I also liked that you could fully disable the VSC on mine, they changed that when they changed to the 430, might make it more difficult in the winter.
My first winter was on the stock summer tires that came on the 17" wheels, very scary (my first winter in Michigan) changed the tires for the following winter to some Dunlop all-seasons and the car was just fine. If it's what you're looking for, I'd say do it.

Get one of the last years of the 400 (LS). They are actually faster/more fuel efficient than the 430 and much cheaper. Better proportioned IMO as well.
The #1 concern is the starter. Make sure it has been replaced or assume another 1200 to replace it at any time. Otherwise, the engine and transmission are good for 250k+ no problem. I had a 2nd gen LS for a while and it drove like a new car.

I had a 1999 gs300 as well. I agree with the nice ride and quiet cabin. I wouldn't hesitate buying another one. If I were you, I'd do some research on www.clublexus.com. Lots of good info in regards to what type of maintenance you'll expect and pricing.
