80% of 1 Series Owners think their BMW is FWD

I think most people don't even conceptually grasp the difference between FWD and RWD. This definitely isn't a BMW-specific phenomenon; people ask me all the time if my S2000 and Miata are FWD. I think they assume that any small car must be FWD.

I am not sure I buy that statistic. Even if it accurately reflects an actual survey, all it means is that 80% of the people asked responded that way. That indicts their survey or implies BMW salespeople lie to their customers. I don't think it means anything other than that. Pretty much everyone I've ever known who had, has, or wants a BMW talks about RWD.
^ This is true. On top of that, people believe whatever they want to believe. I've known people to insist their FWD car is RWD against all logic. It's not so much that they couldn't tell, it's that they just plain don't know, so they assume whatever makes them happy.

most car buyers probably don't care FWD vs RWD.
Statistic can be made so that it reflects what the tester wants to show.

Car enthusiasts are quick to throw insults when the majority of the population really doesn't care. I hate to break it to you but for most people, cars are just a means of transportation. They don't know the horsepower, torque, curb weight, 0-60 times, etc..
Get real people.

Wait wait wait, people who buy BMWs don't blindly buy BMWs, they know their machines, afterall, BMWs are the ultimate driving, therefore driver's, machines!
I do question the accuracy and validity though, but even finding a few people let alone enough people to motivate this kind of research is enough to make me laugh at the herd we call our society.

When most people see the 1 Series, people see the least expensive BMW badge they can buy imo.
Lets face it, if S2000s came with automatic transmissions, there'd be ten-fold on the roads today.
