The low-end BMW's have always been about "image" and not necessarily the "ultimate driving experience". Its the cheapest way of stating that "I drive a BMW" without having the driving experience that embodies the marque. As long as the owners of the 1 series look cool spinning their rear tires in the snow, they don't care! LOL. Its the old "fashion before function" image.

Wow is all I have to say. I'd like to think that these numbers are just not true. But then I think of the average cosumer and I fear it may be closer than I'd like to admit. I'm willing to bet a poll of questions for new s2000 owners would likely turn up some pretty crazy results as well. I for one know when I was driving my s2000 there were many older men and women who own them. Not to dig or stereotype but I'm willing to bet many of those purchased the s2k because it was a cute affordable drop top two seater who will never push the car to 1/2 of its real potential.

Let's face it, if you're on this board you are an enthusiast. We should also face the fact that the majority of people that purchase a 135 or a s2000 will never see a community like this.

I'd like to think this isn't true as well, but I think most of the 1 series models I've seen confirm this. I'm sure there are a decent number of 135 drivers out there with a manual transmission who love driving their car, but most of the 1 series models I've seen are 128 convertibles. I would imagine most of these folks bought the car because it was the cheapest BMW convertible out there. It reminds me of the old 318ci.
Still, people's lack of awareness and over emphasis on image aside, why does BMW need to rebadge a Mini? They already make a Mini. It seems like something GM would do, not the people who make the M3. Then again, it's also the same people who make the X6...

It brings up their fleets fuel economy. Thus, they can continue to make other series like they always have and continue to meet ever increasing fuel economy requirements at the same time. Also, by providing a FWD platform for people who don't particularly care for the performance side of BMWs, they can make less sacrifices (particularly in the 1-series, since everyone who just wants a cheap BMW can now opt for the 0-series) in their normal vehicles.

OT: I don't see why everyone's surprised by this number. I bet the great majority of that 80% assumed Front Wheel Drive meant the engine was in between the front wheels or something. It's a term every enthusiast knows, but that very few non-car people know. Unless a brand has very little appeal to the average consumer (read: Lotus), the majority of its consumers aren't going to be enthusiasts. We make up a small minority in the car buying market.

Bingo! That's the question I had earlier. I suspect a lot of the survey respondents did just that.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, to be exact. And for those who don't know, in Germany it is pronounced Bee Em Ve (rhymes with Way) - the W is pronounced as a V.
