Add a Civic Type R or wait for something else?

If you could possibly be considering the upcoming Tesla roadster, you'd be insane to get the ctr. FWD?
I like the Alfa idea. If you want Japanese reliability, the Infiniti has a similar front mid engine layout like the S2k. Can be had with Sport options that could be attractive.
But this is all getting so far away from what the S is at its core. Its fun because its so small and (compared to these other cars) light, and especially because it was built with so few concessions to luxury or amenities. Its handling and steering is so direct and immediate. Not something you are going to easily replicate in a car with more seats.
The one that does come to mind is the Evo. At least the older ones had it. Not sure about later models.
But if it were me, I would be looking for something that's not fwd, with direct and immediate steering and a lean toward uncompromising performance. That would be closest to core mission with more seating capacity in my mind.

I agree with you overall. If the OP checks out some reviews of the Alfa, you will see that it's noted not only for it's fantastic engine, but also for how direct and immediate it's steering response is. In fact many have said that it's a sports car first that happens to have 4 doors.

Type R....go for it for sure. It is 100% my next DD vehicle after i'm done with my BMW. Just waiting for the price to creep down a smidgen.
There will never be a better MT, 4 door, FWD vehicle ever made. I can almost guarantee it.

The CTR is cool because it's Honda's return to a reasonably priced car that can really perform. But, I also can't stand the looks of it. But that is just my opinion. Currently, we have 3 vehicles for our needs. The Jeep Wrangler unlimited for unstoppable drop top family mover that also works for camping/overlanding and driving offload trails, the VW GLI for quick and fun to drive family mover, and S2000 for pure drop top driving fun. When it comes time to replace the VW GLI, I'm inclined to upgrade and look towards the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. It's a 4 door that is also an all out sports car that also happens to be gorgeous and a future classic. Given its Ferrari engine and top level performance, it qualifies as an exotic to me. Although, I could care less about 0-60 times.

Your wife will look even more stunning in a Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio which can be driven to the yacht club without looking like you're driving your teenage son's car.
The Civic Type R is, well, still a Civic. Might impress prepubescent boys but few others. And certainly not your passengers. No one in my family appreciates being thrown all over the car while I enjoy a back road. Heck, I'm not even getting any tire squeal before the strains of "Slow down!" arise from all seats. At least if painted black all the faux scoops and vents aren't so noticeable.

Thank you for the Alpha Romeo suggestion... looking into it now. I've always been a Honda guy... but I think they have neglected this family sports car buyer market.

I don't understand these passengers unhappily thrown about comments at all. Just because your performance sedan is capable of tossing passengers doesn't mean you have to drive it that way when they are present.
I think the point os a car that can be driven enthusiastically when you want (like when is driver only), and more sedately when its being used for shuttling people around.
Sure, any performance vehicle will have a harsher ride than a boaty luxo barge. But the way its being portrayed does not match reality...

CTR is a nice car...as long as you don't look at it. And isn't that something that you seek in a car, for it to look good?!
Look at the current (Dec. 2018) issue of Car & Driver. Lots on the CTR as well as the Hyundai Veloster N, which, although it comes up short, doesn't look too bad in comparison. And it's a much better looking car.

I had a high power FWD car...once. Never again. I realize the CTR is impressive for what it is, but once you start adding power, you’ll be reminded it’s still fail wheel drive. Not to mention it’s extremely ugly.
