Default American Cars

Cars that are sold in the U.S. Brand new, do they all read in miles for the mileage on the car or can they have both miles and Kilometers. The reason wh I am asking is because my parents just bought Corvette and the guy says it's an American car, but the odometer reads in Kilometers. I thought that it would be miles. Does anyone know.

Well when it is imported to Canada it has to meet whatever standards and regulations that Canada has, one of those would be that the odo has to read KM. Just like Japanese cars when they come over here the odometer has to read miles.

Doesn't every car have the ability to switch back and forth between the two? Someone was probably just fiddling with buttons while it sat in the showroom...

You can't switch the odometer back and forth but the speedometer you can. If the Vette was made and sold in the US would it only be in miles. I understand what your saying about it be made in the US and brought over to Canada for sale. That's not the question if it was made for the US market shouldn't it read in miles. Every car that I've been in, in the US the odometer reads in miles.

What does CarFax say? Or what is the VIN number?

Corvettes are made in Bowling Green, Kentucky, so they are "American" cars. Most digital speedometers have the ability to be changed from MPH to KMH. Take a look at the owner's manual and it may very well tell you how to switch it.

ps. This doesn't belong in "S2000 Talk".

OK for the people that don't understand the difference, Speedometer is totally different from the odometer. I'm talking about the odometer.
I realise that the car is built in Kentucky, and the engine is from St. Chatherines, Ontario, Canada. But cars that are bought at a GM dealership in the US, brand new, does the odometer read in miles.

I don't think the Corvette engine comes from Canada.
If the speedo on a digital display can change to KM, then the odo will also change. It's easy enough to find out. When he changes it to KMH, does the odo also change numbers?

No, it doesn't change and yes the engine is built in Canada.

I agree with Xviper, check the owners manual.
