The RX-8 is a fun car to drive, is lauded for its handling characteristics, and has been called a four door S2000. It just gets terrible mpg.

Honestly, though, it's a great car. Easier to drive than the S2000 (around corners, that is), great brakes, great balance and they're cheap to buy as well. Definitely slower in a straight line, though, and not as nice looking (subjectively).

Interestingly, the S2000 was quickest in all of the handling metrics in that test. Didn't brake as well, was second fastest in a straight line and somehow lost to the RX-8 and 350Z. Kind of weird, to my mind, since the RX-8 doesn't accelerate any more effortlessly and even subjectively, it's not quite as fun (stock for stock). The Z just isn't nearly as focused or fun, either, but it's definitely easier to drive fast and it's quicker in a straight line for most people.

The RX8 may handle well and be fun to drive, but I'd rather be a cabin boy on a greek freighter than drive a RX8.

I looked hard at an RX8. I could just never get past the fact that the engine only lasts about 1/2 as long as a normal piston engine.

First, it's Motor Trend, so discount it just from that.

Second, once upon a time this would be a good opportunity to start an AP1 "told you so" line of attack. But the good old AP1 v. AP2 days seem to be gone. (Or maybe wrong forum.)

Third, completely impossible to understand how they got the rankings they did. Although, fourth, it seems like maybe the reasons they rated it lower are exactly the best reasons to like the S2000!

There were 3 or 4 Best Motoring shoot-outs that featured an S2k and an RX8 in the mix. S2k beat the RX8 in every one.

My dad has an 06 RX8 and he loves it. I do too! It feels a bit lackluster in the acceleration department, but the steering feel is fantastic and the car is very comfortable and quiet inside.
