as the others have said, the 2.0t is a stout little motor. its responds very well to basic mods like intakes, downpipe/exhaust, and computer chip/tune. it makes a good amount of its torque at a very low rpm which makes for a zippy little ride thats fun to drive.
the 3.2 liter v6 is a tried and true design, 24v silky smooth 6 cyl. the sound and linear power band of the VAG 3.2 is something to be experienced. it feels like good ol fashion german engineering. the numbers on paper may not impress, but the vr6 is a gem of a motor imo. gas mileage will obviously be considerably lower than the turbo 4cyl.
from what i can remember the 2006+ cars were availalbe with the 2.0t and the 3.2. 2005 and earlier were available with a few different engines depending on if they were early or late 2005s. including the 2.0t. whatever you do stay away from the shitty CVT tranny.
i think it really depends on what your friend wants. is he going to mod the car? DD? in that case the 2.0t.
the v6 is a great choice as well, just less gas mileage, harder and more expensive to squeeze extra grunt out of. however awd and that sweet v6 are quite the combo! and oh the sound of the thing!!!

Look for an '08+ model with the TFSI motor (not sure about the MY changeover). The TFSI has a better PCV system and High Pressure Fuel pump design..
The earlier FSI motors have PCV, cam follower, and coil issues. Though Audi has stepped up and is replacing all coils FOC..

I've got a B5.5 Passat with the 1.8 turbo, and a new 2010 B6 Passat with the 2.0 turbo. Four pot all the way! The engines are bullet proof if properly maintained.

If it is the 6spd, the 2.0T is great. The auto is terribad with the 2.0T. Like others have said, the 4 can be reflashed to perform as good or better than the 6 with better fuel numbers to post. The tuning options are greater.
