Backpackers car for sister in law

Hi, my sister in law is backpacking in Australia and is looking into buying a car to make a roadtrip (15k km). Turns out to be cheaper than renting one according to her.
I have no idea what's best for driving there so looking for some input.
She's looking at a Subaru outback 2001 with 200k km and a Nissan Pathfinder 2002 dual fuel with 270k km.
Is it interesting to have petrol and lpg? Or is it just something else that can go wrong?

4wd VS AWD? I doubt she will be doing some serious offroading but it's always possible she might try...

Pricewise that are about 1000 dollars apart.
What would you guys recommend?
Cheers!

"Outback" probably covers 95% of the continent. :) Something tells me petrol (gasoline) is gonna be much more available not only outback but everywhere. Dual fuel seems an unnecessary complication. There's an unconfirmed report they actually have a few paved roads in Australia outside the major cities. But there are still major areas where they don't exist. The tropical areas in the North get lots of rain and mud during some seasons. (It's summer there.) Subaru has all time AWD. The 2001 Subaru Outback in North America didn't have the ground clearance of out current vehicles. Don't know about those in Oz.

Australia is darn big. When were visiting Brisbane a few years ago my wife and daughter proposed a day drive out to see Ayers Rock. We went, but not by car. Couple hours in a commercial airliner got us out there. :)

Top Gear showed that a lotus esprit is a good cross country vehicle :).

but I'd go outback.

Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated:)
I think she will be going for the Subaru, the ground clearance is a bit less but she had a better it feeling about that car and it has a foldable bed in the trunk.

Cheers!

I’m currently in New Zealand and I have seen countless Subarus during this week in good-great condition. I think she will be okay with this — maybe just get a ppi done to ensure it will be good for her trip.

I'd be so tempted to pick up a used "ute" if in Australia.
