Is the Miata really that boring? I find my n/a fc3s slow and want to buy a Miata and then turbo it for ~250whp. But it would be stock while I save up. Or is it only boring because you have a Cayman and a gtr and had an Elise, etc? I also hate when everyone says rx8's are unreliable. I own a 91 rx7 as I stated and it hasn't done me wrong so far since owning, only oil changes. But yes, it does get terrible mpg. The most I've gotten in the city was 12mpg and most on the highway was 24mpg.

Are you looking for more of a DD or more of another track car? Is the bias along the lines of a track car that you can DD or a DD that you can track?
The only reason I'm more in favor of the e36 is because you already have a cayman S and a gt-r. So, if you're itching for more on track performance, grab one of those.
As far as e36 maintenance - I figure you can get a beater one for $5-7K, do all the bushings, cooling, camber plates, GC-koni's and probably still have enough for a set of RS3s.
My preference would be an ap1, but given the request for a DD and your current fleet, that's why I lean toward the e36. If I got an ap1, i'd have to do, retainers/keepers, banjo bolts/oil, and possibly seem weld that one area by the front control arms - I've seen that come apart on two local ap1s. (this is for an ap1 that'll see track use)
Rx-8, well, too many bad stories, and if you want to track it, I wouldn't expect the reliability to get any better. The car's reputation precedes it...

I remembered my 93 Miata being slow but back then the fastest car I owned was a RX-8/S2000. After driving stuff like the S/C Elise, GT-R, Cayman S I think I've been ruined. I need something that doesn't require me to plan my entry onto a highway 500 yards in advance to keep up with the flow of traffic />/>
For a DD under 10k I usually consider Mini Cooper S's, B5 Audi S4's .I know they aren't known as reliable but every one I see for sale usually has 200,000+kms. So they were obviously reliable enough to get to that point.

Probably more of a DD that I can track when I don't feel like tracking the GT-R. I never did retainers/keepers/banjo bolts or any of that crap on my 00 S2000 and it was still running perfectly when I sold it at 145K miles and probably had upwards of 1000 autocross runs on it in it's lifetime. A forum member owns it now and I think it's still running well. The M3 I know off the bat from previous ownership it will need a ton of stuff but once it's updated it will be good for some time to come.
