Ran across a mint 02 Boxster S with 38k miles. Drove very nice and owned by senior citizens looking to retire in another country. Anyone have experience with these?

Be on the look out for an RMS failure. It's more of a problem for ones that are babied and rarely driven hard. The cars like to be driven hard and are meant to be driven hard.

Yep know about the rms and IMS issues would need to do a PPI. Curious how they are for DE? Read about some issues with oil starvation and melted ps.

I can't comment too much on how they stack up for DE at the numerous SoCal tracks since POC is pretty large here and that's where most people run their Porsches. Everyone else who shows up for track days in Porsches normally doesn't know how to drive them.
However, I can confirm that they do have oil starvation issues, which apparently is not easily remedied by baffling. I think either a dry sump or acusump are the remedies for that, and are a bit more costly.
According to my previous Porsche mechanic from my 951 days, the 986 boxster and S were extremely reliable - he was using one for his DD and raced GT3s on the weekends.

One of the requirements for whatever I buy is that it's ready for HPDE more or less out of the box. Having to change to dry sump or accusump is probably beyond what I want to put up with for 20 minute DE sessions. I don't need something that can stand up to endurance racing but I don't want to deal with oil starvation, overheating etc.
