Man I love those cars. I drove one once, and it was everything it was cracked up to be. The balance is just so right from the factory, and the car has a much more raw feel and more driver involvement than the E36. The motor is very willing too.
My mom has had an '89 325iX (AWD) since new, and I have to say the basic E30 is a very durable car. Yes you have to keep on top of things like any other 15 year old car, but that said my parents really don't take care of theirs anymore and it just plain refuses to die. So the common parts should be pretty sturdy, the special M3 parts are probably more expensive, but these cars are so ubiquitous that most of the trouble spots are well known. People I know who have owned E30 M3s say they are fundamentally durable and sound, but maintenance issues can be costly.
The E36 is probably a better idea- newer, more refined etc. But nothing feels like an E30. They were all really great driver's cars, superb steering feel and much less isolated than a modern BMW. They don't make 'em like that anymore, and I think this has to be the perfect blend of raw involvement and yet semi-modernity for people who grew up in the 80s.
