Buying stock shocks for my 2002 S2K
 

Folks,

I need new shocks for my S2000. It has 83K miles and it is time. I have been very happy with the stock Honda Shocks, but I don't want to go to the dealer and give them big bucks for a set of stock shocks. People have recommended I get Koni adjustable shocks, which I can get at a good price, but I am worried that the ride will be too harsh. I know a lot of gear heads have lowered the suspensions on their S2000s and changed coils and inserts. Is there any way I can buy those unused, or gently used inserts? Is their a forum for this? (Not crazy about Ebay). If you think that this is a bad idea, let me know.

Also, what other hardware would you replace besides the inserts? I set up a VW Rabbit for racing 30+ years ago, but haven't worked on any cars in decades. So I am little rusty.

I'm in a similar situation at 80k miles. Been looking at Koni "orange" STR.T shocks that are supposed to be more of an oem replacement option. Don't have any direct experience with them yet though.

I might have a set in the garage off a 40k mile car.

Ive ridden in koni equipped s2ks and found the ride to be a little choppy, IMO bang for the buck the bilstein pss cant be beat. Im not sure what they go for now (1200 new??) but they used to go for 800$ shipped from autoanything. Although it is only height adjustable, the ride was MUCH more plush than the oem setup. For an s2k that sees only daily duties and street driving I wouldnt go for any other shock in its price range, these are a hassle free direct drop in shock that only needs the top hats from the oem suspension.

I have this same dilemma, I need new shocks as well. Already tried to go the used route and got some not much better than I had so didn't even put them on.

I was planning to order the yellow Koni shocks mid October, but came across this thread. If these Bilstein coilovers ride better would I lose some handling? Do I have to lower the car with them? I think its low enough already and would prefer to keep stock ride height. I've never like the look of a slammed car and theres way too many speed bumps and potholes around here anyway.

If the consensus is those coilovers are the best for general street enjoyment with stock ride height I might consider the extra spend.
