C7 Vette

tje interior quality also stopped me from buying one as well. when i was looking for a car i drove the E46 M3, 2004 vette, porsche (few different ones), s2k, lower end model honda's like prelude's civic si's etc, evolution's and a few others. my hands down biggest complaint about the vette was the interior. It was actually so poor that i wrote it off.

my GF's great uncle buys a new one just about every year and each time i get in to the new one i cant help but hope they did something with the interior to finally get over that hurdle and it consistently disappoints.

although i dont track my car and those that do might not give a crap about the interior, its where i spend almost all of my time when dealing with a car. Id expect it not to look and feel like a park bench and cross bread with a hose-riding-saddle

I have a track car and don't need to track my daily driver. I do give a crap about the interior but I'll freely admit the drive itself is more important. While as I said before, I'm not thrilled with the seats. They are however very comfortable for the long haul and with the new two tone, don't look bad to me. Difference of opinion I guess. Or my poor taste. I've had Recaro's that looked good and were great for an hour or two, but not for a day long drive. By the way, a good hoRse riding saddle can cost as much as a pretty nice S2K.

One question, is a hose-riding-saddle something that's used in porn movies?

I would guess both the viper and vette are going to have much improved interiors in the next generations. It will be interesting if the price/performance ratio is kept in tact. I have a feeling the viper is trying to move up in the world at least from what I have heard. My guess is it's 100k for the base model, but I'm basing that on almost nothing. I am interested to see if the C7 tries to make a transition , or does it halfway or stays where it's at in terms of parts bin sharing and lackluster seats. If I had to guess it will be an improvement over the C6, but not as good as a porsche. But, they sell so damn many of them I don't think it's a huge concern to really 'upgrade' the interior. I think moving up level where 3000 units a year is acceptable is more important to dodge to be honest as they just don't sell enough vipers to justify the cost of making one when they end up selling in the mid-high 80's. Honestly, I haven't been as excited about 2 redesigns as I am about these two cars though. I wasn't as excited from the C5->C6 transition until the Z06 came out. I'm very excited to see what the base model C7 is all about. I also find it hard to pull the trigger on the base CX every time though as I know there will always be some kind of uber vette right around that corner that is still affordable.

What is a great interior'? Is it the materials, the layout? Is it having 79 adjustable seat positions? Is it a 7" navigation display or 9"? Cloth or leather seats? 2 or 10 upholders?
Do you want updated info on everything in your car displayed in front of you?

What do you want in a interior?

Here is what the Vette does right for me.....
  • Looks - No quibbling here. The Vette has always been a looker.
  • Chassis - Competent with some decent proprietary design elements like magnetic adjustable dampers and fiberglass leaf springs.
  • Front Engine / Rear Drive Layout - As it should be, no complaints.
  • Reliability - GM does a nice job. Vettes are pretty reliable and inexpensive to maintain.

But, there are some things that could be improved at the Vette's price point......
  • Interior Quality - If anything has been holding back the Vette these past few decades it's the low rent living quarters. GM has shown it's more than capable of designing a modern interior with nice materials. C'mon guys, nothing over the top, just a nice clean design with good ergonomics, materials, switchgear, and seats. Think Honda or Volvo.
  • V6 Sacrilege - I know, I know, Vette's are V8's. Blah blah blah. I think the time has come for a turbo V6 option if it can beat the weight, nearly match the power, and beat the fuel efficiency of the LS engine family. That is admittedly a tall order.
  • Transmission - A dual clutch flappy paddle gearbox should really be available in GM's technology showcase. The last Vette I owned had an abysmal Tremec T56 6 speed. There has to be a manual transmission that can handle the power and torque of an LS engine without feeling like a throwback to the 60's. I hated the T56.
  • Size - Drop 200 lbs and work on shrinking the overall dimensions.
  • Forward Visibility - My biggest gripe with the Vette is the driving position and its effect on forward visibility. I'm 6 feet tall and I just don't feel comfortable judging where the corners of the car are. The S2000 in contrast is great in that respect.

I don't think GM is incapable of making any of these changes. And I don't think any of these changes would necessarily drive the cost of the car through the roof.

I disagree about the size, Spudracer. The Vette is a very small car. The Hyundai Genesis coupe, G37, Mustang, 911, both the e46 and e92 M3 coupes, the Audi S5, are all LONGER than the C6 Vette. Hell, even the Cayman is only about an inch shorter than the Vette.

The Vette is considerably shorter than the rest as well. The Vette's size is an illusion. It's actually a very small car.

Also, the weight is phenomenal for a car with all that hardware. I too wish they can make it lighter the same way I want every car to weigh less, but the Vette is already incredibly light, all things considered.

Vette is already awesome the way it is...realistically what keeps me from buying one is limited funds

Personally a Z06 with a little bit of weight reduction would be all I would really want done. Perhaps a much nicer shifter as well.

A member of this board has a 2008 Z06 with 13K miles on it. And $60k in warranty claims.

Maybe this is a rarity. But because of it, I will pass on a Corvette engineered within the last 15 years when GM was losing money - because they were loving to cut corners. And I bet they still are.

^ I am assuming that with that much money's worth of work it needed a new engine. So yes that is a bit of a rarity. The LSx motors are all very reliable. The only real issues that they seem to have are oiling issues under high G loads. This is normally a non issue with the dry sump engines, so IDK what cause the problems that your friend had. I know that a replacement LS7 is something silly like $20-30k. That alone would make a dry sump Grand Sport more appealing to me than a Z06. The extra power, and slightly lower weight of the Z06 would be really nice, but it I had one I would run the sh*t out of it, and knowing how expensive an LS7 is would just make me too nervous.

Overall IMO the Z06 has proven to be very reliable, and very low maint. for a car of its performance level.
