I don't know why you'd ever get the 5MT over the 6MT, given the 6MT is effectively geared shorter (on the low end) and longer in the final two gears, for easier cruising and costs barely any more...

The US-market Cayman S always had a 3.4L and the only manual was a 6spd. The 5MT was only on base models with the 2.7L. For 3.2L and 2.5L cars, you'd have to go back to the 986 Boxster.

3.2L was also in the 987 Boxster S for '05-06. Got the 3.4L to match the Cayman S in '07.

Ah, clearly I don't know my Boxster history too well. I knew the Cayman debuted in 06 with the new engine, and the Boxster picked it up the following year. Wasn't sure when when 987 Boxster started...

Yeah, the 987.1 has a weird history.

2005: 987 Boxster S came out
2006: Cayman S came out (opposite of the typical coupe-then-convertible cadence)
2007: Base Cayman came out, Boxster S got 3.4L Cayman S engine
2008: No major changes
2009: All of the 987 models updated to 987.2, which did away with the IMS bearing in both base and S engines in addition to adding direct injection and PDK option

Also worth noting (maybe?) that when the 987.2 debuted in 2009 the base engine switched from a 2.7 to a 2.9 liter engine.
