remember when the first hondas came out...now how cool would it be to have a mint one. im gonna buy one and put it away for 30 years. the price is right.

1) People don't think it's right to flood the market with cheap crap because everyone will base their purchases on their idea of value, so if they buy it, you can't necessarily call it cheap crap.
2) No one is forced to buy whatever, everyone has their own dollar vote.
3) Everyone wants to grow the domestic economy, however everyone manages their own household finances as their own economy, guess which one wins out.
4) They're not getting a free pass because it's not our right to tell another country how to run themselves so long as its not intentionally hurting other people/countries.
5) Just because it's built in America doesn't mean it's going to be higher quality, remember american cars in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s vs. Japanese/German made cars?
6) No one is technically forcing the texas owner to not operate a factory here and forcing him to do it overseas, his need for being competitive and to capture the highest profit margin drives him to do so.

To digress a little more on macro theories, people freak out about the weaker dollar saying it's the end to our civilization, but the weaker dollar in an economy where our imports massively outweight our exports for a lot of reasons namely the ones you're touching is actually a good thing; it makes our products cheaper to foreign countries. It also makes the incentive for companies to manufacture here greater, and if our dang government would give small businesses more incentives vs. using leftover TARP funds, maybe we could get the pendulum swinging.
Also, the Chinese manufacturing reputation is catching up with them, as made in china isn't something to necessarily be proud of, and they realize this. If they have plans for growth, they're going to have to overcome this issue, but by doing so they're going to have to play nice in the global economy.

He meant that most cars will be manufactured in China, much like laptops and electronics. Whether this will be true or not is up to time, but that's what he meant.

I've visited BYD HQ in Shenzhen during June 09. It's amazing that an electronic contract manufacturer that assembles motorolas, nokias, and apples all of a sudden became the major domestic car brand. The company won a lot of its business in the contract manufacturing business by stealing designs/people from Taiwanese competitors and reproduced the results through even cheaper mainland Chinese workers/management.
With cars, their various designs in the economy, family, sporty coupe categories were more than similar to toyotas and mercedes, with prices at rock bottom levels. Their triple digits growth in the domestic markets were staggering, which says a lot about their quality and value.
I was looking at their hybrid family car and thought that we'd probably see this BYD brand in US before 2015.
