CR v Nismo
The December issue of Road and Track has an short comparo of the CR and the 350Z Nismo. On a short, tight track in Michigan, the CR lost!!! And the Nismo weighs 750 pounds MORE than the S. The Nismo only won by about a third of a second. The CR was way behind at the end of straights, but was able to regain some lost ground in the tight turns. The article concluded, the Nismo will take a wider lead on a bigger, more open track.
In the article, R&T reports that Honda said they didn't up the power because there is no more power to be had without FI. Hmmmm. Are all the aftermarket N/A mods people buy BS, or is Honda full of it? I'm guessing the cost to get another 5 or 10 hp out of the 2.2 just wasn't worth it.
Anyway, I found this article very sad. I remember when the S first came out. It was hands down the best performance bang for the buck, besting the Boxster S around the track and leaving cars like the Z3 in the dust. I am convinced that Honda will handle the S just as they did the NSX. No real improvement and just make the same car as long as they can sell some.

you forget that these high quality lightweight n/a mods people buy are almost 1k each...and now you have to make them silent enough for road use...hmm asm priced hi-flow cr exhaust, mugen style intake and header...easy extra 3-4k to the price of the car...now the cr is 40k+tax/tags...honda is not gonna invest that...they said the honda is still more fun to drive so lets get away from the numbers

For an extra thousand bucks from Honda, the Mugen ECU + Mugen cooling mods would have gone a long way. Honda owns Showa, they should've just used Mugen's spec from their NZ Showa suspension and that would improve laptimes easily. Since it's a club-racer, it doesn't need to have a soft ride.

I am a bit surprised they didnt at least give the CR the '06 Hondata reflash. Wasn't it 14whp without any hardware changes through the middle of the powerband? (no peak gain though) Makes me wonder if that would have given it an edge.

even a emanage tune on an AP2 would net 30wtq across the bandwidth. there was someone around here that tuned his AP2 with just emanage and colder plugs and it gave pretty good gains.

Keep in mind that Honda has to meet federal emissions regulations - somebody tuning an emanage in his garage doesn't. (Well, depends on what state you live in, I guess. )
The Hondata reflash only gives meaningful gains in the 5000 to 6000 rpm range - shouldn't be much of a factor on a race track.
Also, while the NISMO is a good bit heavier than the S2000, up to a point the extra weight doesn't hurt it THAT much. I mean, the skidpad g's are only slightly off from the S2000s, so it can take a corner at similar speeds... The extra power the Z has is certainly a help. Well, we'll see how the CR does in a real race - the upcoming 25hr of Thunderhill.
