Default Current Or Ex Mr2 Turbo Owners

I am considering selling my '93 Turbo for an S. I would like to know what you guys think. I am hearing some people say the performance is equal. Others say the S2K is more FUN. Others say S is more fun. I have even heard that the S drives like a Civic unless you drive it hard. I would like to gather as many opinions as possible before I actually drive it for myself.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

i went from a 91 NA, swapped 91 Turbo w/ TD06SH-20G to my 2002 S2000.

My Turbo MR2 is way faster than the S2000 in accelleration and has much more torque. However, I enjoy the S2000 much more. It is classier and is a great driving car. If your MR2 is stock, the S2000 is a huge step up.

I'm very happy with my decision. I still have my MR2, but it is a problematic car especially when u do alot of upgrades.

My last car which is a NA late model '97 Jap import. The boot lid (Trunk) is lightly open BTW in the picture. My son now owns it and it still looks just as stunning in that brilliant white. I loved it and wasn't at all keen to part with it. I'd probably still have it, if my son hadn't been waving pound notes at me. Well before I bought the S2000, I looked around for a 2 seater roadster and it had to be quicker than the MR2. Having test driven the Boxster, AudiTT, and Z3 2.8, I bought the S without hesitation after a fantastic test drive. The MR2 if it had a fault was there was a definite acceleration lag around the 25000-3000 rev range before it got going. Whilst it's a great handling car, the front end never felt that well planted and rather light, at larger 3 figure speeds. This is never a problem with the S2000 which feels superbly well planted at high speed.

I have driven an MR2 Turbo which is much quicker although the one I drove did have the usual lag waiting for the turbo to kick in. My guess is it's a close call between the two cars in stock form, and the turbo MR2 may well be quicker in straight line performance. They're only available here as Jap imports and many are 250 bhp stock.

A big consideration is what sort of driving you're into. If it's straight line drag racing, the MR2 is easily and cheaply modded to get really significant (100bhp+) performance gains. This is not the case with the S2000. Honda haven't left much on the table for performance increase, and many people have spent lots of money to gain modest power increases in comparison.

You really need to get a test drive in an S2000 to make up your own mind. My guess is you'll love it. The lack of torque criticism you've no doubt heard, relates more to 'on paper' technical comparisons rather than any real world driving situation you're likely to encounter IMHO. A recent car mag review in the UK stated that up to 6K revs, the S2000 is on par with a 1.8 liter MX5 (Miata). I entirely agree with that statement. Exploit the next 3200 revs though, which are available in each of 6 gears, and you get acceleration that lifts the car into a different class, accompanied by a metallic spine tingling engine note which has to be experienced to be appreciated.

It's a fantastic driver's car, and when the top's down and the sun is shining, you wont really give a damn if someone else is a second faster 0-100 with a supercharged modded monster or spraying NOS! If that's likely to bother you, don't buy it, leave it for someone who'll appreciate it.
