I think it definitely depends upon what kind of cars he likes. My dad has always liked European sports cars so he'd appreciate a Jag or BMW convertible more than a Corvette or G35.
I also believe he should have some say in what he gets. If someone was buying me a "toy car" as a present, I'd sure like to have some input as to what I'd get.

How about one of these??!!
He doesn't need breathtaking performance, looks cool, it's a convertible, it will stand you much less than a 911, gallardo, etc. and it's a Porsche.
