Default Datsun 2000 Roadster?

So the other day my neighbor saw my cleaning my S in the driveway and we chatted about cars. He mentioned he had owned a Datsun 2000 Roadster back in the day and how it was a great car. I know all about the 240Z and I have owned a 280Z myself but have rarely heard mention of the Roadsters that preceeded the Z car. So I looked up the specs of the Datsun 2000 and was shocked to see that it had a 135hp 2.0 liter back then with a 150hp when opting for the triple Mikuni carbs. It only weighed 2000lbs. That must have been the by far the fastest Roadster of that era with the MG's and most of the of the other Roadsters barely making more than half that power. Anyway I'm surprised they're not more sought after these days. There have been several go through BAT but only 10-12k for a really nice one. I never hear about them. Anyone hear ever owned one or driven one?

They are awesome little cars. Beautiful instrumentation and interiors for its day. Obviously very light and sporty. Rear suspension is dated design but it works just fine.

Fun little car. I drove one regularly one summer as a friend wanted a motorcycle and his parents refused and bought him the roadster... we would meet and I would trade him my bike for his car for the day.

I owned a 1965 1500 Roadster for a few years, fun car! Perhaps the worst braking car I have ever owned with drums on all four corners. Later cars got discs up front. Prices for Fairlady Roadsters are on the upswing (much like good early Z cars) with real good SRL-311's powered by the U20 now fetching $30K+ and higher. The Datsun Roadster was often overlooked in favour of their British competition, although the Datsun was better in almost every way, Japanese cars were still in their NA infancy when the Roadster debuted in the early 60's. They are very simple and reliable, certainly don't expect modern driving dynamics however. There are quite a few Datsun Roadsters which have had SR20 conversions, now that would be fun!

I actually own a 1968 1600. The thing is an absolute blast, put a competition spring/damper setup and some sticky tires on it and it can really haul around corners. Quite impressive for its age. I bought it to learn major car work on something decidedly simpler than modern cars and I fell in love with its looks. From what I have come to understand, the reason it performs so well is two fold. The sophisticated (for its time) overhead cam and an overbuilt chassis really did wonders for it and it dominated C-class racing and there's a handful out there today still besting miatas and the like in autocross. I love mine but as I recently picked up my S, its been difficult deciding between continuing to restore my datsun and upgrading the S.....

I had friend who was a big Dastun guy and he owned 3 of them, all at various stages of build. Had one with the triple Mikunis, roll bar and track suspension. This was about 25 years ago. He also had something like one of the 210's or station wagons, whatever it was, but it had like a 6" lift and AT tires, all safaried out with racks for strapping camping gear to and camo paint lol.

Also, they look great, like Japanese Alpine Tigers - the latter ones had taller wind screens.
