drove m roadster and 335 coupe
checked out the 335 coupe and m roadster today. while both are great cars, very modern, cushioned, technological, it only highlighted how the s2k, having so much less power, could still be in a league of it's own kind. imo, modern car that go very fast, but you dont really feel it are very bad vs cars that feel fast but dont necessarily need to be going really fast. just wanted to say that.
oh, but comparing the g37 to the 335, the G is so close if not equal in performance/fun to drive that it is easily the smarter buy imo. 37k vs. 51k.

The base price on a 335 vs. a G37 is $40,800 vs. $35550. I put together some nicely loaded versions and it was $41,525 vs. $49,525 for comparably equipped cars.
If I were to leave them stock, I would definitely consider the G37, but the 335 is a no brainer if I had planned to fix it up. Two thousand dollars and you are looking at 400 whp.

You must have been comparing a 1 or 2 optioned G37 to a near fully loaded 335i. Granted, the 335i is more expensive... but not by that much. And I disagree with your "equal in performance" statement as well.
Other than that, yep, the S2000 is still in a league of it's own. 10 years from now it'll still be a blast to drive.

prices are only about $5K apart, on average...

imo, there's basically $5k difference between the two cars. and as someone mentioned, if you go the lease route, that gap is further narrowed.
performance wise, they are NOT the same. however, if the OP meant that after the price diff, the performance for value is basically the same, then i can see that. that's why they r such close competitors.
i think in the end, the deciding factors for a potential buyer are the subjective ones, how much $ diff matters, how the styling look, need for badge prestige, and if the buyer must have a driver's car.

I know I'm a bit biased but I have driven both cars and there is no question which is the better performer if you drive both back to back. I have not spent any seat time in a 335 coupe but my 335i sedan is essentially the same car and even before being modified it felt a good bit quicker than the G. Also, for anyone deciding between these two cars and willing to consider a lease the BMW is hard to ignore. You can lease the better car for less money and that makes it an easy decision.
BTW, this may change over the next couple years as the USD continues to plunge vs. the Euro.
