I haven't driven either and probably never will but you have to agree that the 135i is more tuner friendly. So if you ever want to make your car faster the 135i is the way to go. If you can stick with similar power for years (depending how long you keep cars) then the m3 shouldn't disappoint. Considering the difference in weight isn't the m3 only slightly faster than an s2k? Looks are subjective but I think the m3 looks a lot better and the sound they make with an aftermarket exhaust is lovely. They look sporty right out the box, where a 135i looks somewhat boring. 1M on the other hand... Aha

They didn't.
They did till October 2010, everyone was entitle for free inspection and replacement if needed. So I am sure many owners got them fixed. Engine was also warrantied for 6 years / 100k miles for free.

Edit: I see OP is in Canada, yeah you probably didnt get freebies there.

I highly recommend that you go to Bimmerforums.com and read the FAQ on the M3 sub forum. As a car to drive on nice days and to tinker on, I don't think you can go wrong with the E46 M3; I wouldn't want one as my daily though. The costs add up so fast. Most of the fanatics on that site will tell you to have at least $4000 stashed away in the bank (per year) for maintenance/something catastrophic. DIY oil changes are at least $100+, and read the DIY on the Vanos replacement if you want to give yourself a headache. There are also a lot of BMW specific tools required to do most jobs.

The M3 is a superb car when working correctly, but don't delude yourself into thinking that this is a low maintenance, easy to own car like the S2000.

difference in oil changes between M3 and S2000 is only 1 extra qt of oil. And its actually easier to do on M3 then S2k
