Thumbs up fair amount

today, after fighting with my mom about my grades and a car, she decides to not help me out with getting a car at all

what do you guys think is fair for me to expect to be able to pay for a car if i have a job at minimum wage and start working this summer and keep working throughout the year?

Not to be a wise guy but...how much money do you have in the bank right now? If you don't have anything you shouldn't buy a car..How are you going to afford gas, car payments, insurance, and up-keep? If you blow a tire or an engine are you going to be able to fix it and make car payments?

I'd say you should work a bit and see how much $$ you are making and save it all up since you said all of it is going towards the car. Then when you have so much money buy a cheap car. Since you are not going to finance a car (most likely) with no money and no work history. At least I wouldn't lend you any money.

This is how most people do it. They don't start off buying a dream car or having mom and dad buy it for them. They buy a cheap car for $900 and drive it around until they can afford something better.

I sold my neighbor my Escort for $900 and he's driven it for 4 years and 44K miles with only putting a new starter and new battery in it. Think if you could do that and you were saving car payments for 4 years how much money you'd have.

I agree with Rai. What would you rather do: work 40 hours a week at minimum wage to pay for a "nice" cheap car and have no social life, or buy a crappy car, beat the hell out of it, work less, go out more, and live life?

A lot of younger people want a nicer car to impress friends/ladies, but what good is that if you can't take the girl out on friday night because you have to work?

Buy a beater, live life, save up, take advantage of compounding interest, and then try not to smile too much when you pay cash for your dream car a few years down the road!

honestly, with a minimum wage job, part time, you could really only swing about $300 a month if you spent it all on your car.

don't forget insurance, which will run you that much per month on a nice car, too.

there are some nice cheap cars around $1K (or so) you just have to look high and low. Sometimes people are getting a new car maybe a relative or a neighbor and they know they won't get much as a trade in and so will let you have it for a neighbor or relative price. My first car was a 76 Chevy Nova. This was back in 85 so it was 10 years old and that was back when cars were not as well made as cars are today. It was not fancy but it ran OK for 3 years for me to get a steady job and buy something better.

Good for your mom in deciding not to help buy you a car, I respect her decision. Why ask us what you can afford? Take out a calculator (or pen and paper) and do some simple 2nd grade math.
