Default Ford GT350R vs. Chevy ZL1

Love these Motor Trend head 2 head's.

Anybody else surprised with the outcome?

Neat review. Can't say I'd ever pick the Camaro, purely based on engine and sound (the Mustang is "special" in those areas), but it's certainly a compelling choice (cheaper, faster, more refined). The Mustang looks quite a bit better, in my opinion, plus it's lighter.

Actual purchase price, however, is nowhere near equal with these cars. The 350R is still commanding a big premium so really, it's almost a moot point that I'd pick the Mustang because I'd be shopping that Mustang against cars that are $85K+....

Just imagine how much faster a ZL1 1LE would've been!!

I don't think I will ever utter the words "I'll take the Camaro".

Comparing Camaro SS 1le to a Mustang GT PP, as much as I love the styling of the mustang, I'd have a hard time passing up the camaro even with all its faults, it's a damn good car. But the GT350, even in non R form, there's virtually nothing domestic with a V8 that I'd take over that car. I'm never going to give Randy Pobst a run for his money even if I was in a GT350 and he was in a Geo Metro, but the GT350 just has so many cool things, namely a high revving, insane sounding V8, that we probably won't get in years to come. No direct injection, V8, no FI, revs to 8000, no crazy suspension with crazy brakes etc, 6 speed row myself transmission, relatively confident it was built well, in a day where sports cars are getting hybrid drivetrains and electric cars are stomping on american muscle at the drag strip, the GT350 has alot of the things that made me a car fanboy. It brings out the 12 year old in me.

I looked at a Camaro SS last summer prior to purchasing my GT350. I actually quite liked the Camaro but it just did not compare with the GT350 after I drove both. The GT350 has a magical way and this is likely the only iteration we'll see of a 'mainstream' domestic vehicle with such a cool bespoke engine like this. I wish GM would stop regurgitating the same motor in so many of their vehicles and design something new. The LS and it's supercharged variants are no longer exciting to me regardless of the power they make. I have also come to the realization that performance cars now are so overwrought in terms of capability it's getting almost ridiculous with every new entry exceeding the previous bar by leaps and bounds. I barely tap into the GT350's performance spectrum on the street.... Perhaps that is why I enjoy my Fiesta ST so much.

The ZL1 is a winner. New recipe with mostly the same old ingredients however. GT350 for me all day, every day.

The exterior construction on the GT350 is straight Ford, but i assume it's the same on the Camaro? If so, I'd take the blue oval over the general any day.
